Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer is going to be returning for a final season that will close the book on Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), but the show's final season will be the first in a long stretch without its secret weapon. Throughout Netflix's version of The Lincoln Lawyer, which adapts Michael Connelly's book series into a TV format after 2011's film version starring Matthew McConaughey, Mickey's world has been well fleshed out. From his ex-wives Maggie (Neve Campbell) and Lorna (Becki Newton) to his staff, Cisco (Angus Sampson) and Izzy (Jazz Raycole), Mickey's world has been a vibrant and energetic one.
While The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 brought in a new character, Mickey's previously unknown half-sister Emi Finch (Cobie Smulders), who's taking the place of Harry Bosch from Connelly's work, there's a lot more story to tell for Mickey. Unfortunately, one of the characters that we as viewers have come to know on The Lincoln Lawyer won't be returning for the show's final season. Despite there already being significant changes to The Lincoln Lawyer season 5, audiences will also have to understand that it'll be the first season since the show's earliest episodes that doesn't feature David "Legal" Siegel (Elliott Gould).
Legal, who's been a part of the series since season 1, was never the show's central character, but has been a big part of the identity of The Lincoln Lawyer. His death was a huge departure from Connelly's source material, and seeing The Lincoln Lawyer without him will be tough.
Elliott Gould's Legal Was A Key Character For The Lincoln Lawyer's First Four Seasons
Image via NetflixAlthough he wasn't Mickey's father, Elliott Gould's Legal Siegel was the closest thing to a father figure on the series. As Mickey's father's former legal partner, Legal was a fantastic mentor throughout the series, especially as Mickey was getting used to having his own practice and taking on high-risk cases. With Legal playing a part in creating a sense of stability for Mickey, he was a great resource for both professional issues and personal ones, bringing a sense of warmth to the familial structure that The Lincoln Lawyer built around its core cast.
While the dynamics between Mickey and Legal often came into play because of a case Mickey was working on, the genuine care that Legal had for Mickey was palpable. Providing a different perspective, Legal was a character who could emotionally ground Mickey in a way that no one else in his life seemed to be able to. A great reminder of Mickey's connection with his past, Legal served a specific purpose throughout his time on the series, and his shocking death on the show will leave a hole for Mickey to deal with as he moves forward in his life.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5 Can Bring Back Legal, But The Show Shouldn't
Although Legal won't be a part of The Lincoln Lawyer in a traditional sense, it is possible that the Netflix series could bring Gould's character back in a different way than anticipated. Revisiting departed characters isn't impossible in the way it once was, so regardless of the fact that Legal's death on the series and Gould's untimely passing could leave him out of the equation in a genuine way, a flashback could serve a larger purpose in The Lincoln Lawyer season 5. Given the emotional impact of Legal's death, a flashback wouldn't exactly be surprising to see on screen.
Even with the capabilities of doing so, a flashback doesn't necessarily feel like a natural step for The Lincoln Lawyer. The final season of the series is already positioned to explore Mickey's legacy, and move through the next chapter of his life as he sorts out his personal affairs and professional endeavors, and while Legal will certainly be on his mind, seeing the character again doesn't feel like a necessary part of the story. Mickey choosing to reflect on Legal rather than the show throwing viewers back to a specific moment feels more in line with The Lincoln Lawyer's style.
