The Legend of Zelda is never an easy franchise to pin down in terms of what direction it might be headed in next, but we actually can say that we do know what the future of Nintendo’s epic fantasy franchise will be. We know that a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is in development, which is revelatory in and of itself, and that a live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is coming out in spring 2027.

As the quality and reverence of video game movie and TV show adaptations have risen in the last few years, so too have fans’ expectations. Ideally, they’re tackled with a ton of sincerity and as faithful interpretations of the source material. Casting decisions are more important than ever, especially if these actors are expected to play these characters for the foreseeable future in subsequent installments, and fans can’t seem to decide who they’d like to see cast as the legendary Ganondorf in this upcoming movie.

Ganondorf laughing in Tears of the Kingdom

On Reddit, users shared some of their fancasts for Ganondorf in the Legend of Zelda movie, assuming that the iconic series villain will make an appearance. A user whose account has since been deleted brilliantly posited that Ganondorf should first appear with “an Agahnim-type alter-ego that isn’t revealed to be Ganondorf until the end.”

However, if Ganondorf is being played by an actor like Idris Elba, whom users like Independent_Aerie_44 and BlueBliss5 would love to see be cast, it’d be almost impossible for fans not to assume who he’s truly playing and spoil that reveal prematurely. Otherwise, a handful of names that are being tossed around include Lee Pace, Dave Bautista, Christopher Judge, and Dev Patel.

Speaking of well-known actors being cast, user runaumok wants the movie to steer clear of A-list celebrity talent: “Unknown actor I hope. The quickest way to kill this movie would be putting a well-known actor in the role.” They also joke that they’re writing this comment before Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson gets cast, but there’s a real and valid concern that fans have about video game movie adaptations.

Toon Link with Ganondorf behind him in Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker

With Zelda and Link’s casting already announced, and the movie being released in roughly nine months, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear a casting announcement sometime soon for The Legend of Zelda’s Ganondorf. It’ll be neat to see who’s been selected, as that will ultimately help determine the tone of the character and the movie.

It’s become increasingly likely that Ganondorf will be played by a completely or relatively unknown actor, but maybe his casting hasn’t been announced yet because it is a high-profile actor whom the movie is patiently waiting to surprise fans with. It’s also possible that Ganondorf is not in the movie, hence why there’s been no casting announcement, yet it’d admittedly be quite unprecedented and bold for a Legend of Zelda movie to not immediately feature him as its primary antagonist.

The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 30, 2027.

The Legend of Zelda franchise follows the adventures of Link, an elf-like Hylian, and Princess Zelda as they protect the land of Hyrule from the evil warlord-turned-demon king Ganon. The series is known for its mix of action, adventure, and puzzle-solving elements, often revolving around the collection of the Triforce, a powerful relic left by the goddesses who created Hyrule.
