Ewan is Deputy Editor for ScreenRant's gaming section. He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy.
Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar.
Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech.
Released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is seriously underrated and doesn't get nearly enough love when we talk about our favorite Zelda games. This early 00s gem from Capcom is a gorgeous, inventive Zelda adventure with heaps of charm and a truly wonderful central gimmick that basically turns Link into Ant-Man, letting him shrink down and explore new areas.
The Minish Cap is still such a beautiful game that I honestly don't think it ever needs a remake. Its pixel art is some of the best I've ever seen, and definitely the best on the Game Boy Advance. Even so, have you ever wondered what the game might be like if it were a 3D adventure? One fan has, and that's why they're remaking The Minish Cap with a totally new perspective and in a whole new dimension.
Legend of Zelda fans will probably be familiar with the YouTuber CryZENx. They spent the last ten years working on an impressive remake of Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine, before ultimately abandoning the project in response to the official remake for Nintendo Switch 2 due to arrive later this year.
Clearly, CryZENx was not put off by this experience, and has instead decided to start work on another classic Zelda game. The dev has shared a very early work-in-progress look at Minish Cap in Unreal Engine 5, featuring the Toon Link we all know and love. Unlike his Ocarina of Time remake, this is a much brighter, stylized effort. To be honest, I already think it's way better, but I am a sucker for cel-shaded Zelda.
It's obviously very early days for The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap 3D, but I'm excited to see how it progresses. CryZENx got really far with his Ocarina remake, even getting to the point that he could release multiple playable builds that let you explore areas like Hyrule Fields and the Temple of Time.
One potential hurdle will be the shrinking gimmick, which I expect will be much more difficult to pull off in 3D for a number of reasons. I'm honestly fascinated to see how that gets tackled, and if you are too, be sure to follow along with the project's progress on CryZENx's YouTube channel. For now, The Legend of Zelda fans will just have to wait till later this year for the next official remake.
