The Internet Reacts To Grand Theft Auto 6’s Price And Missing Physical Disc

2 hours ago 2

Well, good morning. If you, too, are just waking up to the bright light of your glowing slab telling you Grand Theft Auto 6 news, you’ve probably just learned that Rockstar’s long-anticipated and much-delayed open-world crime drama will cost $80 for its standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition that includes special vehicles, weapons, and apparel for protagonists Jason and Lucia, as well as a free month of the GTA+ subscription service. This edition also includes exclusive shops with customization options (tattoos, hairstyles and so forth) and a side mission that will only be available to players who pony up the extra cash.

The $80 price tag comes after months of analysts speculating about what Grand Theft Auto 6’s price would be, with some suggesting its scope merited a higher price tag than most games on the market. $80 for a game is higher than the standard cost for a big AAA release, but it’s not unheard of. Nintendo has started selling its big Switch 2 games at this price, such as Mario Kart World and the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Xbox originally declared that The Outer Worlds 2 would be an $80 game, but reversed course before it launched last year

On top of the $80 price tag, the game won’t feature a physical disc at launch, with boxed copies instead including a digital download code.

So how are folks handling GTA6’s sticker shock and discless boxes? Let’s see:

Rockstar rakes in billions with GTA Online.
Still too cheap to do a physical release for GTA VI.
Still filled it to the brim with extra monetization.
Lobbies against preservation and customer rights via the ESA.

This is what politicians suggest should be left to self-regulation. pic.twitter.com/vivs7UB6Te

Not at all surprised their is no on disc version and is a code in a box.

This prevents any leaks from happening cause let’s be real some GTA fans are crazy enough to break into disc manufacturing facilities and retailers to steal discs.

Rockstar hates, hates, hates leaks. https://t.co/Yx4U5uIrxy

If the biggest game of the decade isn’t shipping a disc release that should tell you where things are going.

I honestly think I'd rather just spend my vacation play Ocarina of Time remake. This digital only shit killed my hype really fast. Thank you @RockstarGames

Like is it just me or is it fucking crazy that they’re locking an entire vehicle customization shop behind a paywall? https://t.co/GAAUx4VF4Q pic.twitter.com/x2ZuQW9pOr

Have Rockstar just killed future physical disc game releases!?

GTAVI will only come with a download code in the physical box release.

This type of release could easily catch on to other publishers from next year. Maybe it saves them disc producing costs, who knows!

But the…

having stores locked behind the ultimate edition in a single player game is definitely a choice 😭 pic.twitter.com/tw4DbQe64e

🚨OPINION ALERT🚨

Locking physical stores feels kinda stinky for a ultimate edition thing. For individual like clothing or weapon skins its whatever, but for example it feels lame to lock the GTA6 equivalent of Benny's behind it… and it's off-road counterpart. pic.twitter.com/jeY7DS7kjw

Grand Theft Auto VI is essentially priced $100, given that they locked a unisex salon, tattooist behind the ultimate edition🚀

The game’s main attraction is those customizations, so it feels like the $80 is made for the optics of not jumping too high in price, but the real… pic.twitter.com/IDpL1rlecj

GTA 6 paywalling semi-interesting *single player content* and shops is absolute dogshit and one of many reasons I have zero hype for this game
