Chris is a Senior News Writer for Collider. He can be found in an IMAX screen, with his eyes watering and his ears bleeding for his own pleasure. He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts.
For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things Bosch, Mission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider's news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.
He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him.
His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan's work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.
It’s been a surprisingly big week for gaming. While players are still digging into Resident Evil Requiem, another highly anticipated release is about to hit shelves — and early reactions suggest it could quickly become one of the standout games of the year. That game is Pokémon Pokopia, a brand-new spin-off in Pokémon’s ever-expanding universe.
Ahead of its March 5 launch on Nintendo Switch 2, the game has already made a strong impression with critics — so strong, in fact, that it currently holds the highest Metacritic score of any game released in 2026 so far. At the time of writing, Pokopia sits at an 89 Metascore on Metacritic, based on roughly four dozen reviews. That places it just ahead of several other major 2026 releases, including Resident Evil Requiem and Mewgenics, which previously shared the top spot. It’s still early in the year, of course, and more reviews could nudge the score up or down as the critical consensus settles. But for now, Pokopia is the best-reviewed game of 2026.
What's 'Pokopia' About?
One reason Pokopia is drawing so much attention is because it breaks away from the traditional Pokémon formula.Instead of battling trainers and collecting gym badges, players control a Ditto disguised as a human, navigating a cozy world where crafting, building, and exploration take center stage. So it's a little bit like Animal Crossing but with Pokémon instead. And as an aside, the marketing campaign in Japan that saw basically everything in Tokyo turned into a Ditto is the most charming thing you'll see. Game features include:
- Building and customizing environments
- Befriending Pokémon rather than battling them
- Learning new abilities from Pokémon companions
- Expanding the world to attract more creatures
The experience also includes multiple biomes and a real-time day/night cycle, meaning the in-game world changes depending on the actual time of day.
Early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with several outlets praising the game’s blend of cozy gameplay and open-ended creativity. Gfinity gave the game a perfect 10/10, writing:
“Pokopia is a 2026 Game of the Year contender that masterfully blends the creative freedom of Minecraft with the cozy charm of Animal Crossing.”
CGMagazine also awarded a 10/10, calling it:
“One of the most robust cozy games to date, essentially melding two Nintendo franchises into one content-rich whole.”
Meanwhile, Game Informer gave the game a 9/10, noting that despite a few minor issues, the title stands out as one of the best uses of the Pokémon license in years.
Pokémon Pokopia launches on March 5 for Nintendo Switch 2.
