'The Funniest Novel of All Time' Gets New Adaptation This September

Robert Wood is a writer and editor based out of Cheshire, England. He is the author of 'The False Elephant: and 99 Other Unreasonably Short Stories' - 100 stories, each told in exactly 100 words.

Rob got into comics via Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man and the UK anthology 'The Mighty World of Marvel,' which was running Frank Miller's Daredevil, Classic Hulk and Contest of Champions II.

Prior to journalism, he worked in copywriting and copyedited for Oxford University Press. He is on X as @PinchTwigs and Instagram as roobwoodjourno.

Later this year, John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces is getting a much-deserved adaptation, presenting what many consider the funniest novel ever written in a brand-new form for the first time.

Published in 1980, A Confederacy of Dunces follows Ignatius J. Reilly as he navigates the lively French Quarter of 1960s New Orleans, with disastrous results for all those who cross his path. The novel received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981, with Ignatius becoming one of the most beloved comic characters in literature.

A Confederacy of Dunces is considered a comic masterpiece, and is a reliable entry in any 'funniest books ever written' list - including those from Vulture, Esquire, The New York Times, The Guardian, Penguin and more. Despite this reputation, Confederacy of Dunces has never received a movie adaptation, but that doesn't mean there are no new ways to enjoy it...

A Confederacy of Dunces Gets New Graphic Novel Adaptation

This September, BOOM! Studios will publish a graphic novel adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces, adapted by Albert Monteys. Monteys' art evokes Ed Lindlof's iconic cover for the novel, and shows Ignatius in his characteristic hunting cap and flannel shirt. The comic's summary reads:

A graphic novel adaptation of John Kennedy Toole’s Pulitzer Prize-winning cult classic - a wildly outrageous satiric portrait of 1960s America that still resonates today.

Set in the French Quarter of 1960s New Orleans, this cult-classic satire follows unforgettable misfit Ignatius J. Reilly as his misadventures ricochet from hot dog carts to Bourbon Street, and collide with the city’s politics, vice, and absurdity.

A wildly outrageous, darkly hilarious portrait of America, still razor-sharp and painfully relevant, reimagined in stunning visual form for lifelong fans and new readers.

For fans of the darkly funny counter-culture satire of Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse-Five.

A preview of the comic shared by AIPT shows how perfectly Ignatius translates to sequential art, depicting his mishaps while working for Levy Pants. An arrogant clod with a very specific genius for Medieval History and a general disdain for modern society, the book's title refers to Ignatius' delusional belief in his superiority to everyone he encounters.

Despite being a comedic antihero, Ignatius is beloved by many fans for his refusal to conform with a world that, while different to his overblown theorizing, is still deeply flawed. Other characters such as beatnik activist Myrna Minkoff, Ignatius' beleaguered mother Irene Reilly and reluctant janitor Burma Jones all contribute to the theme of tragicomic rebellion against a stifling world.

BOOM! Studios' graphic novel will be the first comic adaptation of Toole's novel, which begs for a visual adaptation. Over the decades, iconic comedy actors including John Belushi, John Goodman and Zach Galifianakis have been rumored to play Ignatius in movie adaptations, only for those projects to fall through (though Nick Offerman did depict the character in a 2015 stage adaptation.) Thankfully, whatever curse has kept A Confederacy of Dunces off the big screen doesn't apply to comics.

Graphic Novel Adaptations of Literary Masterpieces Are Becoming More Common

Confederacy of Dunces is just the latest example of an iconic novel getting a pitch-perfect graphic novel adaptation. Albert Monteys previously adapted Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five with Ryan North, while new adaptations of Watership Down (James Sturm, Joe Sutphin), The New York Trilogy (Paul Karasik, Lorenzo Mattotti, David Mazzucchelli), Lord of the Flies (Aimée de Jongh) and Dune (Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson) offer new ways to engage with literary masterpieces everyone should experience.

Indeed, Albert Monteys' Slaughterhouse-Five: The Graphic Novel showed how masterfully sequential art can adapt comedy, with Monteys' art and framing exemplifying Billy Pilgrim's unique relationship with time, even as it heighten Vonnegut's bittersweet humor. It's clear from Ignatius J. Reilly's pratfall in the preview above that the same will be true for A Confederacy of Dunces.
