Dani Kessel Odom (they/them) is an autistic lead writer and TV critic who frequently covers sci-fi shows like Doctor Who and Pluribus, fantasy shows like The Magicians and Percy Jackson, horror, and superheroes. Their specialty is onscreen book adaptations.
They have covered events, such as the Denver Fan Expo. Their articles have also been shared by professionals in the field, such as Damien Leone and Lucy Hale. Their review for Ponies was quoted in the show's TV trailer.
In university, they majored in English Writing with a minor in psychology. They have always had a passion for analyzing TV and movies, even taking filmography and scriptwriting classes in university. They also studied and participated in onstage and onscreen acting extensively from the ages of 7 to 18.
Aside from working at Screen Rant, Dani has worked as a freelance editor and writer over the past decade, often in a ghostwriting capacity.
The Expanse could potentially return for season 7 in the future, making it more exciting than nearly every other upcoming sci-fi TV show. The cancellation of The Expanse was a punch to the gut for fans everywhere. Six seasons just weren’t enough.
Those who know the books lost out on the best arc of the series. I’m particularly bummed we never got to see Winston Duarte and the Laconian Empire in full force, though we got a small tease of it. Viewers unfamiliar with the books still lost out because they had to say goodbye to characters they cared about way too early.
From a purely logistical perspective, the decision made sense. It felt like a natural stopping point due to the 30-year time jump between Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising. It’s also risky to bring back such a meaningful show. That doesn’t change how much we all want to see more seasons of the TV show. I’m convinced the door is pretty much closed at this point, even though I’d absolutely love to watch more seasons.
Not everyone has lost hope in the possibility of a revival of The Expanse, though. Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, who use the pen name James S.A. Corey, did an Ask Me Anything on Reddit on April 14, which focused primarily on James S.A. Corey’s new book The Faith of Beasts. However, many folks still inquired about the chances of The Expanse continuing onscreen, and their responses were cautiously optimistic.
Daniel Abraham Points To Futurama As Proof That The Expanse Could Get Revived
HuluDuring their AMA, Abraham and Franck confirmed that they wouldn’t continue writing in the world of The Expanse, since the story is done. They also stated that the fan theory about The Captive’s War and The Expanse existing within the same universe is incorrect. However, that potentially disappointing news is balanced by their statements that The Expanse could still be revived.
When asked about the chances, Daniel Abraham thought that it was certainly possible, saying, "I mean, I'm watching Futurama on Hulu these days, and that thing's been cancelled half a dozen times..."
This argument fits perfectly with The Expanse because it was already canceled once after season 3. Prime Video saved the show after Syfy abandoned it. There is plenty of reason to think that a second continuation is possible.
Similarly, Ty Franck discussed the possibility of books 7 through 9 coming to the small screen. He said, “I think that any adaptation actually getting made is a low percentage shot…But since The Expanse is already a thing, and is pretty popular, we have a slightly higher chance than most other things.”
Obviously, Abraham and Franck aren’t the folks making decisions at Prime Video about what to make, renew, cancel, or revive. They don’t necessarily get to choose whether we get The Expanse season 7, but they make good points about the possibility of it happening.
The Expanse Season 7 Would Beat Out All Other Upcoming Sci-Fi Shows
The chances of a new season of The Expanse make it more exciting than almost every other upcoming sci-fi project. The only sci-fi shows I would personally put above The Expanse season 7 are Neuromancer and Murderbot season 2. I know many who would drop every other upcoming sci-fi show, though, if it meant more seasons of The Expanse, which is completely valid.
The Expanse is one of the best sci-fi shows in recent history, and its profound impact cannot be denied. Prime Video could actually listen and give them more of the show they really want. There’s a good chance that audiences would turn out for The Expanse season 7.
However, there is one big caveat. Prime Video cannot just bring back The Expanse for one season. Some fans have suggested that The Expanse season 7 could wrap up the three remaining books, but there is just way too much story to cover in a single season.
Prime Video would need to make a three-season commitment so that fans won’t be left with cliffhangers or unfinished stories. There’s no point bringing it back just to give us one or two half-assed seasons. In this case, it’s all or nothing. Either keep it at six seasons of The Expanse or give us all nine.
