Unfortunately, in recent weeks, well over 100 employees across multiple teams were let go, including ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda Game Studios, including developers working on Fallout and The Elder Scrolls 6. As a result, many gamers and industry professionals, as well as Bethesda employees themselves, predict that development on TES6 is certainly going to be affected.
After waiting nearly a decade for another glimpse at The Elder Scrolls 6 at this point, further delays will come as a major blow to patient players, but Bethesda insists that fans don't have anything to worry about (via Eurogamer).
According to an official update from Bethesda Softworks in response to a TES6 query from YouTuber MrMattyPlays, The Elder Scrolls 6 "roadmap is unaffected" by the recent round of layoffs at the studio. This may be difficult to believe for many gamers, however, especially considering current developers at Bethesda have stated that these losses "will have a substantial and cascading effect" on in-progress projects (via PushSquare).
Further, according to another current employee, developers are worried about these layoffs specifically delaying The Elder Scrolls 6's release, saying plainly, "We're worried about this delaying the game" (via Gamespot). With multiple people with insider knowledge expressing deep concerns over the layoffs impacting the release date, it's hard to take Bethesda's word for it right now.
The new update from Bethesda isn't all that surprising, and is obviously the position they'd have to take regardless of the reality behind the scenes. Fans have noted that it's a little concerning that the studio offered a massive update on all ongoing projects after the layoffs happened, as it appeared more that the studio felt obligated to reassure fans everything was fine, nothing to see here.
Add to this the fact we still haven't seen any form of gameplay, a new trailer, etc., in over 8 years and have no reference point for what stage in development the game is at currently.
Ultimately, we're reaching a tipping point for The Elder Scrolls 6 where players are starting to lose faith that the game will see the light of day anytime soon. Without some actual footage or more information on the project, such as details about the game's setting, a specific release window, or even another trailer, Bethesda's assurances are going to be taken with a massive grain of salt among longtime fans.
