Since 2018, Wonderstorm’s The Dragon Prince has become a reliable YA animated series for Netflix. After its seventh season wrapped at the end of 2024, it was a question of whether Netflix would keep the show going, but now Wonderstorm is putting that choice in its fanbase’s hands.
During San Diego Comic-Con, the studio unveiled its sequel series, The Dragon King. Set over seven years after Prince’s final season, a now teenage Ezran still has his dragon Zym, who’s helped continue a “fragile peace” in Xadia. When a new Dragon Prince shows up from exile, Zym discovers his claim to the throne may not as ironclad as they all thought, and he might have to fight for his title. Other characters from the original series are set to return, now having “advanced into their adult lives, to face even more complex challenges.”
Unlike its predecessor, King’s been billed as an adult animated series that can be a gateway to newcomers and the third arc of the overall Prince franchise. Wonderstorm’s launching a Kickstarter campaign in the aims of securing enough funding that can help it find “the right partners who can meet all the funding needs to bring a world-class series to life.” The campaign will involve “unique ways” for fans to get involved in the development process, and to sweeten the deal, Wonderstorm’s announced Prince actors Jack De Sena and Dante Basco will reprise their respective roles of Callum and Zym, and Liam O’Brien (Critical Role) is joining as the exiled Dragon Prince.
The Dragon King Kickstarter will launch “soon.”
