Ridley Scott fans never have to wait too long between films, as the 88-year-old continues to be one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors. Less than two years after “Gladiator II” hit theaters, Scott is ready to roll out a new project: “The Dog Stars.”
Jacob Elordi leads the sci-fi drama (taking over a role originally intended for Paul Mescal), which follows a pilot living in an abandoned Colorado airport hangar after a deadly flu virus has largely wiped out human society as we know it. While he has befriended an ex-Marine (Josh Brolin) while battling a band of invaders known as Reapers, he pursues a radio signal that suggests they’re not alone in the wilderness. Margaret Qualley, Allison Janey, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong also star in the film, which is adapted from Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name.
“The Dog Stars” is written by “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. Scott, Smith, Cliff Roberts, and Michael Pruss serve as producers on the film.
Disney debuted the trailer for “The Dog Stars” during the studio’s Thursday afternoon presentation at CinemaCon, giving it a high profile slot alongside films like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” The film’s late August release date allows it to function as both a summer blockbuster and a potential awards contender if reviews are positive. Other notable films teased at Disney’s CinemaCon presentation included Martin McDonaugh’s “Wild Horse Nine,” “Toy Story 5,” “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” and the live-action “Moana” remake.
Given how quickly Scott works, it’s always a safe bet that he’ll be returning to the director’s chair soon after “The Dog Stars” opens. He is currently attached to multiple projects, including a Bee Gees biopic and a period war film about the Battle of Britain.
“The Dog Stars” will mark the completion of a very busy year for Elordi that began with the release of Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” and continued with the long-delayed third season of “Euphoria.”
20th Century will release “The Dog Stars” in theaters on Friday, August 28. Check out the trailer below.
