Spoiler Alert: This list contains spoilers for The Diplomat Season 4.Four seasons in and The Diplomat delivered a season that was as perfect as perfect can be. Created by Debora Cahn, the hit Netflix political thriller centers on career diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), who is thrust into the high-stakes role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom as a major international crisis unfolds. Kate is forced to navigate dangerous global politics, defuse international conflicts, and manage her rocky, turbulent marriage to the newly appointed Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
After three dynamic seasons, the latest eight-episode drop was an enthralling explosion that saw the world creep close to catastrophe thanks to the impulsive ego of the power-hungry President Grace Penn (Allison Janney). Leaving off with a brilliant cliffhanger, The Diplomat has set up some extraordinary mysteries leading into Season 5. It's time to speculate about what comes next in the brilliant story.
Has President Grace Penn Started World War III?

It shouldn't come as any surprise that politics plays a crucial role in the narrative of The Diplomat. Rather than exploring a brand-new conflict this season, Season 4 picked up where the previous left off as the swirling drama related to the Russian submarine that carried the nuclear-powered weapon, the Poseidon, continued. While Kate convinced United Kingdom Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) that their nations should unite to bury the weapon, Grace and Hal secretly sent an American submarine to capture the Poseidon for themselves. Unfortunately, this only created more tension. While trying to pin Trowbridge down via blackmail, his resignation only opened the door for newly minted Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker) to cause more trouble. She gave the green light to Russia to retrieve the bodies from their lost submarine by entering their territory, which means they'll discover their weapon had been stolen. This certainly does not bode well for the president.
The final scene at the G7 showed Grace not only threatening to attack any country that stands between her and her mission; she's ready to ready, aim, and fire with warships in European waters. Having previously survived an assassination attempt, Grace is locked and loaded, willing to take risks if it means causing human loss. As Janney told Tudum, "She doesn't like to be seen as weak, and she doesn't like that the other members of Congress are saying, 'Maybe you should just take a few days off or whatever.' And Grace is like, 'No, I will not be stopped by this. I'm not going to be afraid. I'm going to do my job, and I'm going to double down on whatever I think is right to do.'" Grace's clandestine political maneuvers have put the United States and the United Kingdom on the brink of a massive international crisis. Her subterfuge against a longstanding key ally threatens catastrophe, and despite the actions of the individuals in her inner circle, Grace doesn't seem willing to back down. If she doubles down, her legacy will be one of a megalomaniac grasping onto power. Tension has reached a boiling point, and Grace is no longer someone you can reel in. With the most important individuals walking out, will anyone talk her off the ledge? Right now, Season 5 might see war arise.
What Did Hal Wyler Say to the Press?
Image via Netflix
The G7 made headlines in real time in the world of The Diplomat, as not only did the President make a wild declaration, but it also caused four key figures to hand over their credentials and resign: Ambassador Kate Wyler, Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah), and Vice President Hal Wyler. The mass walkout caused great shock to everyone in the room, but with the press on the other side of the fence, Hal was more than eager to take the opportunity to speak his mind, his favorite pastime. But what did Hal say to the press? Speaking to Deadline, Cahn revealed, "I knew what I wanted to do at the end of the season, and that didn't change all the way through. It was just a question of how to get there."
Serving as the ultimate cliffhanger, the episode ends with Hal's back to the camera as he begins to speak. It's time to open the door to conspiracy theories because, in practice, Hal's move was noble. This is a man who is notoriously known for wheeling and dealing. Will he admit he resigned, or is this something more nefarious, invoking the 25th Amendment to give him the power to take over as President? While he's played coy about his true intentions for four seasons, there is a universe where this was a long con he concocted while everyone had blinders on. Of course, that speculation could simply be too juicy for television, and he's had a true revelation, and Hal is embarking on a genuine character shift.
Where Does Todd Penn Stand?

Season 3 gave The West Wing fans an extraordinary reunion between two favorites when Bradley Whitford was cast as Todd Penn. Rising from Second Gentleman to First Gentleman, Todd didn't want to just be a passive player but someone who wanted something to do. Essentially having to babysit the First Gentleman, Kate's once-jovial alliance with Todd begins to shift when he's made special envoy to the UK, dropped straight into the political minefield. Completely out of his depth, he has some disastrous moments, privately fearing that he has "killed NATO," but the truth is, his presence was not only a personal ulterior motive for his wife, but he also became the necessary mouthpiece that Kate was unwilling to be. When the walkout occurred, Todd proudly stood by his wife's side, exclaiming he's "along for the ride." It appears that he's doubling down on Grace's high-risk military and territorial posture, becoming the ultimate "yes man."
Speaking to Collider, Whitford revealed that there may have been a moment in which Todd wanted to walk out, but admits, "At the end, he's there with her." When pushed on where Todd might align in Season 5, Whitford admitted that Todd's in a "really excruciating position." He continued, "I don't think he can ever abandon his loyalty to her, but I think he can not help but disagree with some of the decisions that she's making. It’s another wonderfully true marital dynamic. I always say that's what's interesting and part of the magic sauce of this show is these incredibly complex, long-term marital relationships. They're very fraught." While he's optimistic that Todd might be the last line of defense in bringing Grace back to Earth, maybe she should dangle the ambassadorship in front of his face; he might go all in on Team War.
What Happens to Kate and Hal's Marriage?
Call it whiplash or a rollercoaster, but Kate and Hal's relationship is one of the most tumultuous yet endearing romances. Defined by political ambition, mutual dependence, and frequent friction, Season 4 saw perhaps the biggest upswing in their relationship. Perhaps that's because they were separated by the ocean and were eager to make their marriage work. At the end of the day, Kate truly loves Hal, despite what he puts her through, personally and professionally. But as they mend their relationship, their rocky road hits major bumps as war looms. Now, with both individuals seemingly resigning, where does that leave the duo? For the first time in quite some time, it appears they face an unfamiliar dynamic where neither is operating inside the machinery of politics that has strained and bound them.
"I think, in the moment, it really was him being forced to make the ultimate moral decision rather than prevaricating and trying to play 23 games at once," Sewell shared with Collider, regarding his split decision to resign. "This is one time when he doesn't get the chance to do that, and he has to make a “wrong versus right” [decision], rather than see things as he does, as a political animal, a thousand different shades all the time. This time, you have to literally just choose, and it takes Kate to force him in that moment to do that." With both parties seemingly united in the same mission, it also seems to mirror their marriage. That is, as long as Hal doesn't go rogue.
In an interview with Forbes, Sewell and Russell spoke extensively about the nature of their characters' marriage. "I know that they're incredibly acerbic and say a lot of really spicy, juicy things to each other, but to me, it feels like a really adult relationship. They are both really smart people. They're not afraid of each other’s opinions, ideas, and intellects. And I think they have a bond that, no matter what nature their relationship is in, they will always have,” described Russell. Both actors noted the parallels between personal struggles and the compromises required to maintain political influence. Have they gone too far in the political realm? Should they begin to waver on their major decision, we might be back to the rocky, disastrous period of the relationship once again.
What Happens to Stuart Hayford and Eidra Park's Relationship?

And now for the other major romance: Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) and Eidra Park (Ali Ahn)! Office romances exist even in politics. What was once a private relationship, the commitment-averse Eidra and super-supportive Stuart made it their mission to find common ground and pursue a stable partnership. After disclosing their relationship to Howard (Adam Silver), Eidra's right-hand man, they blocked out time to systematically work through historical hurdles. They even share mutual space in both their flats. Though Eidra casually proposes marriage for convenience, the passing joke serves as a pathway for progress. And then President Penn went postal when it was revealed Stuart was being recalled for protesting her military strategy. Eidra struggled with this fallout, knowing how deeply it affected her; it's now a question whether she'll follow him back to the States.Having grown immensely closer, the sudden recall puts heavy pressure on the pair. Careers have split couples before, and this major roadblock could derail all the progress they've made. That said, Kate is the voice to offer Eidra a placement in D.C. so she can be with him.
In an interview with TV Insider, Ahn spoke about Eidra and Stuart's relationship, what a future between the pair might look like, and why they are together. After asking showrunner Cahn, Ahn revealed, "It is the unspoken vocabulary, the way that they take care of each other and give space for each other and understand the stakes of what they’re doing, that they can, while they're both about to deal with some serious geopolitical sh*t, the moment right before they're getting dressed up and listening to music and just having a quiet moment in each other's presence before they have to go launch." While their new positioning might derail the hope for more intimate moments, their mutual love and respect will keep them together. That is if they don't have to deal with global war in the process. That said, speaking to Tudum, Ahn did give one intriguing hint about her character: "I think at that moment, it's like the old mantra: My job is my lover."
Where Does Kate Wyler Go Next?
Image via Netflix
The overwhelming question that Season 4 set up for Season 5 is what Kate Wyler will do next. It is called The Diplomat, after all! As the catalyst for the walkout, Kate's status in government seems to have come to an end. Though that might also depend on several individuals' next moves. Standing up for what she believes was a strong, powerful move, bigger than herself, but in the game of politics, there may be more to her motives. This season was hard for Kate as she watched two of her allies fall—one to death and the other to resignation. The death of Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) took a toll on her. She may not have shown great emotion at his death, but it certainly rattled her. "Those bonds and relationships you forge with people are so heightened because you're far away from all your things, and your people, and your responsibilities, so it just becomes bigger and more intense," Russell said to Collider. "And I think that is very true of Dennison and Kate for a million reasons. It's a huge loss."
While Kate's future is in peril, the momentum she built from her actions has made her a powerful and influential figure. As Mensah shared with Tudum, "Kate Wyler is a firework, and she does things in firework-y ways. Billie is a sniper. I don't think she would have left out the front door; she would have left out the back." Russell echoed that she loved that moment for Billie. This was the first time in which Kate's actions have been met with major sway and respect. By triggering the mass exodus, Kate has more leverage than she ever had before. What may occur next is a stalemate. Will these high-ranking officials and career professionals risk it all? Will President Penn get the message? Whatever happens next, Kate's place in the puzzle has changed significantly.
