Armor Digievolution is one of the Digimon franchise’s most unique concepts. This form of change relies on the use of Digimental, ancient treasures that contain the data necessary to give more power to ancient beings like Veemon and Armadillomon. By granting these creatures the power of the DigiDestined Crests, new and extremely powerful Digimon were born.
While this concept has kept being explored by newer entries in the franchise, it has mostly remained exclusive to the cast of Adventure 02, the second anime. Yet, a lesser-known CD drama released in 2001, might have hinted at the idea of this evolution being granted to the original partner Digimon, by giving them bizarre and never-again mentioned Armor Forms.
The Original Partner Digimon Imagined Their Armor Forms
These Concepts Were Never Given a Description or An Accompanying Image
Digimon Adventure 02 Armor Evolution into the Unknown is a CD-exclusive collection of short stories that take place after the ending of the second season of the anime. The fifth tale of this collection, known as Armor Evolving in Chaos, narrates a bizarre occurrence that allows the original partner Digimon to imagine and transform into their Armor forms. Palmon, Mimi’s loyal plant-like companion, comes up with the idea of a new being named CheerGirlmon, who immediately begins praising her friend. Tentomon names his new form Selfishmon, a creature who cannot think of anyone but himself.
Every member of the original cast imagines their own Armor Evolution until it is Agumon’s turn, who slips and bites his tongue, preventing him from fulfilling his transformation. The story makes this occurrence seem like just a game of pretending among the first partner Digimon, as their forms are ludicrous and hilariously bad. Despite this, many fans have wondered for years what these versions of the beloved digital companions would look like.
Bandai, the company in charge of the franchise, has never again touched upon this topic. What is more, neither a description nor a concept art of this form has ever been released. This has been a source of disappointment for fans for many years, as Armor Digievolution is one of the most cherished mechanics in the series. The idea of their favorite digital monsters being allowed to obtain such a coveted transformation remains a simple dream to this day.
Armor Digievolution Should Expand Beyond 02's Cast
No Other Group Of Digimon Partners Can Use These Forms
While Armor Evolution has been expanded throughout the 25 years of the anime, this concept has remained almost exclusive to the 02 cast. No other group of partners has ever been granted armor forms, despite the pleas from fans. The hesitation to give the original partners an Armor Evolution is understandable, as the anime made it clear that only ancient Digimon can achieve this power. Yet, the series has gone through multiple retcons, which could have given Bandai the opportunity to give Agumon and his friends their own armor forms.
The original Digimon Adventure cast is undoubtedly among the most beloved in the entire franchise. Giving them their unique Armor Digievolutions would be an amazing gift for fans and would be an excellent way to expand the lore of the series. Nonetheless, this amazing franchise will forever be cherished by fans, whether new armor forms are granted or not.
