EXCLUSIVE: Canadian outfit Fathom Film Group, producer of The Defector: Escape from North Korea, has added Nicole Butler, former co-CEO of Pier 21 Films and executive producer of Crave dramedy Late Bloomer.

Butler will lead development of new scripted projects, particularly in drama and comedy, while Ann Shin continues as CEO, overseeing direction and the full slate of scripted and unscripted content. The company has been best known to date for unscripted.

The Butler addition follows the hire of Philip Svoboda as Head of Business Affairs and the company’s launch of a YouTube true crime vertical. Shin and Butler will be attending Prime Time Ottawa.

Fathom currently has two true crime documentary series in production with platforms, four feature documentaries in the pipeline, and a slate of comedy and drama projects—including a procedural series based on an Ann Shin project. The company is also known for Oscar longlisted doc My Enemy, My Brother.

“Collaborating with Ann to help shape a scripted slate within a company that already has such a distinct creative identity is exciting,” said Nicole Butler. “There’s a strong foundation of excellent work and meaningful IP at Fathom, and I’m eager to build on this to develop bold, character-driven stories.”

“Fathom has always been driven by incredible access, deep research, and strong authorial voice. We’re excited to bring Nicole on board to help translate that DNA into premium scripted with real momentum. Her deep industry experience and expertise position the company for long-term creative and business sustainability,” added Ann Shin.
