The DCU Has Shown Exactly Why Wonder Woman Can’t Debut Yet In Its First 6 Movies & Shows

The DC Universe's first 7 releases in its timeline all serve to collectively further explain why Wonder Woman has not been formally introduced into the franchise at this point in its run. With the DCU timeline being in its first few years, a key point of audience excitement is naturally around major heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman will appear in its story, and bring a new take on the biggest comic book names of all time.

This has only been furthered by the DCU's different approach to setting up its cinematic universe, which crucially involves not starting off with all of the biggest names that audiences know best and have seen on-screen before. Instead, the DCU is holding back on some key figures for the time being, allowing some characters who have gotten less focal live-action screentime like the Green Lanterns to take the reins for a while.

Though this makes the first leg of the DCU's run more exciting - since there's more uncertainty around when and how some huge figures will appear - it does also mean we seem to be a fair few years off some big names entering the franchise fully, as appears to be the case with the DCU's Wonder Woman. However, the DCU's first releases and their trajectory explain why plans for a Wonder Woman movie look to still be in the talking stage, and why this in fact seems to be for the best when it comes to the hero's on-screen story.

The DC Universe's First Releases All Focus More On The Sci-Fi Side Of The Franchise Thus Far

The DCU has set the stage somewhat for the more fantasy-leaning side of DC's lore already, but the overall trajectory for the franchise at this stage focuses far more on the sci-fi side of things at this point in time.

That said, this is more obvious in some releases than others. Superman delves into black holes and pocket dimensions as well as Clark's intergalactic origins, Supergirl delves even further into space with its own wide-reaching interstellar story, and Lanterns focuses around the titular Green Lanterns and their roles as galactic guardians, too, meaning things are relatively straightforward in all these regards.

Even the DCU releases that delve away from this kind of clearer territory have more sci-fi-esque angles, though. Our early looks at Clayface's body horror prove it's taken a page right out of the book of classic sci-fi horrors like The Fly, for example, and the premise of being exposed to a chemical that transforms the nature of your genetic makeup is an inherently sci-fi leaning one.

Similarly, Creature Commandos had a more sci-fi-esque fixation due to its cast focusing around figures like Frankenstein's monster and The Bride as well as Doctor Phosphorus, and Peacemaker season 2 diving deep into the concept of alternate realities accessed through technological means is impossible to not view as a sci-fi storyline in most lights.

Altogether, this overarching trajectory for the franchise further justifies Wonder Woman having not debuted yet in the DCU, as the ideal setup for the character would be to build out more of the fantasy aspect of the franchise in order for the universe to have prepared itself more tonally for her more mythologically-inclined side of DC's mythos to emerge.

The DCU's Wonder Woman Deserves More Setup Time To Make Her Debut Perfect

Decisions like having Wonder Woman villain Circe appear in Creature Commandos and otherwise showing that magic exists in the world of the DCU have gone a crucial way to setting the stage for the eventual debut of this universe's iteration of the iconic DC hero.

With that said, with Wonder Woman's DCU debut seeming to not be on the near horizon, it makes sense for the franchise to take its time setting up her story and ensuring that her eventual arrival in the DCU feels as exciting as it can be, rather than rushing the introduction of one of the biggest heroes in all of comic book history.

Much as the DCU appears to be doing with Batman, having Wonder Woman's debut be steadily set up by introducing connecting characters and finding releases that can flesh out the magic and mythology side of the cinematic world means we can enjoy the DCU Wonder Woman appearing in a universe that's already built itself up in a way to make her arrival as exciting as possible.

Indeed, it seems that the more DC Universe can flesh out parts of its canon that mean as little of a Wonder Woman film's story as possible needs to be taken up with establishing more about an already years-established movie world the better, particularly when also looking at Diana Prince's hopefully long-term story in the new DC cinematic universe.
