The Conjuring is coming back for more horrors.

The Conjuring franchise is one of the highest-grossing horror movie series in history, surpassing $2.5 billion at the global box office. It began in 2013 with James Wan and explores the "real-life" case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The universe expanded with spinoffs, including Annabelle and The Nun, and is known around the world as one of the most iconic franchises of its genre.

Dread Central has reported that Garrett Wareing and Amanda Fix will be the new Ed and Lorraine Warren in the prequel The Conjuring: First Communion. The team behind the massive horror universe has yet to respond to the reports that they've found new faces for the upcoming prequel. Wareing is known for his roles in The Long Walk and Manifest, and Fix is known for Orphan Black: Echoes and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.

The new actors are taking over from Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who had appeared in all the main Conjuring movies up until the 2025 installment titled The Conjuring: Last Rites. Their performances of Ed and Lorraine Warren are certainly cemented in the horror hall of fame, and will be a tough act to follow. However, it hasn't been made clear if the actors have left the universe completely, or if they're simply taking a step back for now.

The plot for the upcoming prequel is being kept under wraps, but it has been revealed that Rodrigue Huart will be directing the movie with a screenplay from Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg. With 11 movies under its umbrella, fans are eager to see what the future holds for such a well-established media franchise and how the prequel will honor while also reworking what both Farmiga and Wilson have made their own.

ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender spoke with Farmiga and Wilson regarding the news of their departure, and Farmiga stated that "as far as we know, we hung up the rosaries. The crucifix is back on the wall, and that's it. Our flashlights have run out of battery." Wilson stated, "All I know is this is the end of our journey right now, and that's how we approached this. It's definitely the rightful way to end this series that we created right now."

The Conjuring: First Communion is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 10, 2027.
