James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The Boys epic run as an adaptation on Prime Video drew to a close at the end of the most recent season, and all of the guts, gore, and glory are seemingly going to be left in the past for a while to come yet. Spanning five seasons and 40 episodes, it was a brilliant and cutting satire of the genre (and life) for the most part, but all good things must come to an end at some point.
That said, the franchise is very much still going to be at the forefront of plans moving forward, with Vought Rising the next big project on the cards at Prime. That will serve as a prequel to the main series, with Jensen Ackles stepping into the role of Soldier Boy once again. While we wait for that, a new game adaptation has just dropped, and it could hit all the same notes that the series did.
As first reported by Flickering Myth, The Boys: Trigger Warning has just released for the PSVR2, with the arrival of the game accompanied by a launch trailer that really does show it has all the chaos and fun that you would expect from an adaptation of the franchise.
Obviously the first-person VR setup really puts the player at the forefront of the action, and there's arguably no adaptation where that feels like a more appropriate design choice than in The Boys. In terms of the premise, it seems to take place adjacent to the main story, with big hitters like Billy and MM featuring prominently. The description of the game from the developer reads as follows:
"Lucas Costa’s life detonates when the Armstrongs—a washed-up but still lethal family of Vought Superheroes—turn a family outing into carnage. The Boys drag Lucas back from the brink, juice him with powers, and throw him headfirst into their filthy underground war against Vought and its Supes. With Butcher and Mother’s Milk guiding from the shadows, Lucas sets off on a no-mercy hunt to put the Armstrongs in the ground."
As you might expect, that means you'll be playing with a bunch of increasingly unstable powers as you work through the story. It also allows the player to choose between stealth and full-blown chaos, with performances from many of the original actors, including Laz Alonso, Jensen Ackles, Colby Minifie, and P.J. Byrne.
The Boys: Trigger Warning is available on the PSVR2 right now, and it looks like one of the more complete offerings on the VR platform at this early stage. You can also pick it up for other platforms, including the Meta Quest, so just check your individual store if you aren't sure about compatibility.
