One of the best TV shows of all time, as well as one key to shaping the sci-fi genre into what it is now, is The Twilight Zone. Created by Rod Serling, The Twilight Zone aired on CBS for five seasons, from 1959 to 1964. The Twilight Zone is an anthology series, and so every episode is a different story with a different cast, though many actors appeared in more than one episode.
Most Twilight Zone episodes are a combination of horror, sci-fi, and drama, many of them with a touch of fantasy, too, as well as a twist ending with a moral. Thanks to all this and its overall quality, The Twilight Zone is one of the best TV shows of all time, leaving a legacy of great episodes with themes that are still relevant, unforgettable twists, and stories that have inspired many other TV shows and movies, and some of which have also been remade and even parodied.

The Twilight Zone’s Best Quote Comes From Its Best Episode
The Twilight Zone has many great episodes, and the one widely regarded as the show’s best is season 1’s “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.” Written by Rod Serling and directed by Ronald Winston, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” takes viewers to the title street, where, one late-summer afternoon, its residents see a big shadow pass over. As they wonder if it was a meteor or something more, strange things begin to happen, such as the power going out, even affecting cars and phones.
When neighborhood boy Tommy tells them of an alien invasion he read about in a story in which these creatures caused similar effects on a street to isolate people, the rest of the residents begin to suspect there might be some aliens living among them. Their paranoia quickly grows, and the residents turn violent, and the episode ends with one of the best twists in Twilight Zone history.
“The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” was remade in the 2002 Twilight Zone revival, but it changed some key details and didn’t have the same impact as the original episode.
The closing narration of “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” has the best line in Twilight Zone history, as Serling says the following:
“The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices ... to be found only in the minds of men.”
It’s a powerful quote that speaks about not just the events that viewers just witnessed on Maple Street but also those in the real world, and, unfortunately, it’s still painfully relevant in the present day, as those weapons and tools of conquest have only become more dangerous.
