Furniture shopping is a major undertaking that needs a considered approach, whether you're looking for a sectional sofa, outdoor furniture, lounge chairs, or couches for a home with pets. But shopping for furniture for allergies is a whole different ball game. I'm allergic to pet dander, pollen, and dust mites, and while I'm currently working to alleviate symptoms through immunotherapy, in the meantime, I am determined to get furniture that will make my day-to-day life easier.
Fortunately, after 15 years as an editor, I've had the chance to test the best furniture — from air purifiers to couches — and I have a good idea of what will work best for allergies. I've also done tons of research on the fabrics, cleaning routines, gadgets, and even plants that can contribute to a clean, breathable home. From the Coway Airmega 400 air purifier to the LG Style smart steam closet, these products will clean everything from the air to your clothing in order to relieve allergy symptoms and alleviate suffering. And they're all available at places like Amazon, Walmart, and Nordstrom, and from furniture brands you love like Albany Park and Saatva.
Keep reading to shop the best furniture for people with allergies.

amazon.comHospitology Products Mattress Encasement ($44, originally $51)
The very first recommendation you'll get for a dust mite allergy is a mattress cover. And you can't go wrong with this encasement that's a bestseller on Amazon. It has a waterproof barrier, the fabric is cool and breathable, and its heavy-duty zipper keeps your mattress safe and enclosed (from both allergens and bed bugs). I simply won't lay on a mattress without it.
nordstrom.comSlip Pure Silk Pillowcase ($115)
I'm going to be honest: when I first bought the Slip silk pillowcase, it was purely for aesthetic reasons. I heard it reduces friction, which curbs hair breakage, and keeps your moisturizer from rubbing off as it's less absorbant and rough than cotton. Imagine my surprise when it also made breathing easier at night as its dense structure is hard for dust mites to penetrate. Win win!
cozyearth.comCozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set ($328)
If you suffer from a dust mite allergy and you've woken up in the middle of the night with itchy skin — even after laundering your sheets weekly — it may be time to switch materials. Bamboo sheets are great for sensitive skin as they're cool and moisture-wicking, which creates an inhospitable environment for those pesky mites, mildew, mold, and more.
Cozy Earth's bamboo sheets are a great, editor-backed option which happens to also be one of Oprah's favorite things. I'd also recommend the Cozy Earth Bamboo Down Alternative Pillow ($138), Cozy Earth Bamboo Down Alternative Body Pillow ($144), Cozy Earth Bamboo Viscose Comforter ($328), and Cozy Earth Bamboo Blanket ($198) for a full, hypoallergenic bamboo bedding set.
Our editor raved about the sheets particularly in this Cozy Earth bamboo sheets review.
Editor Quote: "First off, these sheets are unbelievably soft. They have a silky sheen and a smooth, cozy, and feather-light feel all at once. They're made from 100 percent premium viscose from bamboo fabric, which is a naturally breathable and moisture-wicking material, and you can feel the difference. I've slept in crisp cotton percale sheets from luxury bedding brands that have certainly felt cool but lack the buttery softness of these sheets. They almost feel like a synthetic material, but without the heat-trapping, sweat-inducing qualities of those fabrics." — Angela Elias, former contributing shopping editor
amazon.comiRobot Roomba Plus 405 (G181) 2in1 Vacuum & Mop Robot ($400)
Indoor allergies mean constant cleaning. Whether you have a pet or you're allergic to pollen or dust, you simply can't afford to let allergens pile up. The iRobot Roomba helps you accomplish that as easily as possible: just turn it on and let it do all the work. Allergy sufferers will appreciate this built-in mop version that auto-washes and vacuums for a more effective clean.
PS Photography | Jessica AndrewsCoway Airmega 400 True HEPA Air Purifier with Smart Technology ($649)
When you're allergic to pet dander, dust, and pollen, a simple air purifier from the drugstore won't do. This Coway Airmega 400 Air Purifier is so powerful that it can capture 99.999 percent of nano-sized particles down to 0.01 microns — including the aformentioned allergens, as well as most bacteria and mold. It also has smart technology features with three modes — Auto Mode, Eco Mode, and Sleep Mode — that you can adjust based on your immediate needs. Get full details in my complete review of the Coway Airmega 400 True HEPA Air Purifier with Smart Technology.
Editor Quote: "I can say it's actually made a difference for me during allergy season and beyond. It's also pretty effective for any kind of air pollution, whether released from wildfires, factories, cars, or construction. I noticed right away that my breathing isn't as labored and I feel less congested. It's also pretty convenient to operate: I can change the settings manually based on air quality or leave it in Auto mode to do the work for me. Overall, in terms of function and ease, this air purifier actually impressed me. Most importantly, it helped alleviate my symptoms during allergy season in a way I didn't think was possible." — Jessica C. Andrews, senior style director
albanypark.comAlbany Park Lido Sofa in Tan Vegan Leather ($1,621, originally $2,494)
Not being dramatic, my whole life changed when I realized I could sit (and sleep) comfortably on leather sofas. Growing up, I'd visit family and eventually start sneezing and itching from just sitting on their furniture. Add a pet into the mix and I'm seconds away from pulling out my asthma inhaler. Leather furniture doesn't harbor dust mites or pet dander, and it's easier to wipe down and keep allergen-free. When it was time to buy a sofa for my own home, I knew I'd want a leather option. The Lido sofa comes highly recommended, as it's gorgeous and cozy plus simple and stress-free to put together (it took me less than 30 minutes). Our editor had only great things to say in her Albany Park Lido Sofa review.
Editor Quote: "The Albany Park Lido Sofa is a dream come true for anyone looking for a stylish, easy-to-assemble, and comfortable sofa that's built to last. It's perfect for those who want to customize their sofa to align with their aesthetic vision without dropping upwards of $5,000 on a custom design. While it's definitely an investment, it's a solid choice for anyone who wants a sofa that's both chic and functional. Plus, it's perfect for families and pet owners, thanks to its durable fabric and removable cushions." — Marisa Petrarca, former contributing shopping editor
lg.comLG Styler Smart Steam Closet with Dual TrueSteam Technology and Dynamic MovingHanger ($1,999, originally $2,399)
Nothing quite prepares you for the feeling of putting on your clothing and having your skin itch all over — not fun. The LG Styler steam closet is a godsend as it sanitizes, refreshes, and deodorizes clothing and items right in the comfort of your own home (and without chemicals!). The moving hangers actually shake off allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander to make clothing comfortable to wear again.
saatva.comSaatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress ($3,485, originally $4,099)
If you're allergic to dust mites, I have some good news for you: a latex mattress will give you the best sleep of your life. Latex is inhospitable to dust mites — it's dense, so the critters have fewer places to hide, and its moisture-repelling qualities mean less humidity, which mites need to survive.
The mattress is an investment, to be sure, but if it's out of your budget, consider a Saatva Natural Latex Mattress Topper ($255) for a more restful sleep.
