15 They Came Together (2014)

A Wild Spoof Of Rom-Coms

Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd talking in a cafe in They Came Together

Your changes have been saved

They Came Together

Director David Wain

Release Date June 27, 2014

Runtime 84 minutes

Rom-coms have a rightful place in the discussion of great comedy movies, but they can also be great fodder for parody as well. They Came Together takes a look at '90s rom-coms and gives its own hilarious take on the tropes of the genre. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star as two business rivals who find themselves gradually turning from enemies to lovers as typically happens in these stories. However, their romance is constantly put in jeopardy by one ridiculous obstacle after another.

They Came Together is so finely tuned into the rom-com style that viewers might miss some of the more subtle jokes. However, there are also some wonderful outlandish scenes, such as Rudd getting stuck in a loop with the phrase "You can say that again." Rudd delivers one of his best comedic performances, while Poehler is perfect as the plucky lead. They are backed by an incredible supporting cast and some great cameos.

14 Sausage Party (2016)

An R-Rated Animated Ride

Written by and starring Seth Rogen, Sausage Party follows a group of anthropomorphized food from a supermarket who inadvertently learn the truth about what happens to food after it's bought from the store, and set out on a quest to attempt to keep themselves from being bought and eaten. Rogen stars as Frank, that titular sausage, with an ensemble cast that includes Michael Cera, Kristin Wiig, James Franco, Bill Hader, Salma Hayek, and Jonah Hill.

Director Conrad Vernon , Greg Tiernan

Release Date August 12, 2016

Cast Kristen Wiig , Michael Cera , Craig Robinson , Salma Hayek Pinault , Bill Hader , Seth Rogen , Paul Rudd , Edward Norton , Jonah Hill , James Franco , Danny McBride

Runtime 89minutes

While there are endless animated movies that make for great comedies, Sausage Party is one of the few that makes for a great R-rated comedy. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg bring their signature vulgar sense of humor to a Pixar-like concept in the story centered around the anthropomorphic food at a typical grocery store. However, the movie takes a wild turn when the food learns the horrible truth about what happens to them when they are chosen to leave the store.

Rogen and Goldberg bring along many of their usual funny friends to voice various characters, including Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, along with some Oscar nominees, like Salma Hayek and Edward Norton. The movie isn't simply content to have a story about food using swear words, as Sausage Party also becomes a surprisingly clever commentary of religion and prejudice, all leading to a climax that embraces the R-rating wholeheartedly.

13 Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993)

Mel Brooks Pokes Fun At A Folk Hero

Robin Hood_ Men In Tights - Poster

Robin Hood: Men in Tights is a comedic reimagining of the classic Robin Hood legend, directed by Mel Brooks. Cary Elwes stars as Robin Hood, leading a group of merry men in a fight against the tyrannical Prince John and the Sheriff of Rottingham. This parody film combines humor and satire, featuring memorable performances and musical numbers that poke fun at the genre and various pop culture elements.

Director Mel Brooks

Release Date July 28, 1993

Runtime 104 Minutes

There have been many Robin Hood movies over the years, but none deliver the laughs like Robin Hood: Men in Tights. From comedy legend Mel Brooks, the comedy stars Cary Elwes as Robin Hood in this takedown of the folk hero legends and, specifically, the Kevin Costner version of the story, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

As with many of Brooks' parodies, there is little story worth noting as it is simply a vessel for the endless wacky jokes and one-liners. However, that is not a bad thing as the movie delivers jokes at such a fast rate that audiences will be laughing from beginning to end. While the movie was initially seen as a lesser Brooks movie upon its release, it has found more of a following in recent years as a genuinely hilarious swashbuckling adventure.

12 Scary Movie (2000)

The Wayans Brothers Skewer Teen Slasher Movies

Scary Movie is a 2000 comedy horror movie that parodies a popular horror films such as Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project. Starring Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans, the first Scary Movie spawned a franchise and popularized the parody genre in the early 2000s.

Director Keenen Ivory Wayans

Release Date July 7, 2000

Cast Regina Hall , Marlon Wayans , Anna Faris , Jon Abrahams , Shannon Elizabeth , Shawn Wayans

Runtime 88 minutes

While Scream was a genre-bending horror movie that was a satire of the teen slasher genre itself, Scary Movie took that idea and went further with it, creating a full-blown spoof movie with the Wayans family at the helm. Scary Movie largely draws inspiration from the Scream movies but pokes fun at I Know What You Did Last Summer as well in this story of a group of teens who find themselves targeted by a masked killer.

The Scary Movie franchise overstayed its welcome in the eyes of many fans, but this first movie still delivers big laughs even if it is parodying movies that came out decades ago and filled with pop culture references far in the past. A lot of its timelessness comes from the performances, with Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Marlon Wayans as the standout cast members.

11 Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (2010)

A Horror Comedy That Earns Bigger Laughs Than Scares

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a 2010 horror/comedy film starring Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk. Labine and Tudyk play a dynamic hillbilly duo that is mistaken for killers when college students around them continue to accidentally kill themselves in gruesome ways. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil marks director Eli Craig's feature-length directorial debut.

Director Eli Craig

Release Date September 30, 2011

Cast Tyler Labine , Katrina Bowden , Alan Tudyk , Chelan Simmons , Jesse Moss

Runtime 89 minutes

One of the hardest things to pull off in the comedy genre is the blending of comedy and horror. While Tucker and Dale vs. Evil certainly leans more into the comedy, it is also a clever subversion of many horror tropes. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine play two friends living in a rural community who escape to their remote cabin in the woods where a bunch of teens are camping nearby. Through a series of misunderstandings, the teens mistake these two friendly men as deranged redneck killers.

While the movie might sound like a one-note joke, it becomes a hilarious and bloody bit of comedic mayhem as the teens attempt to stop the supposed killers, only for each one of them to suffer some grisly accident. Tudyk and Labine really sell the movie with their lovable performances as these two men who just wanted to relax. It is a wonderful play on horror staples like Wrong Turn and Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Director F. Gary Gray

Release Date April 26, 1995

Cast Ice Cube , Chris Tucker , Nia Long , Tom Lister Jr. , John Witherspoon , Anna Maria Horsford , Regina King , Paula Jai Parker

Runtime 91 Minutes

The "hangout movie" is an underrated comedy subgenre, as the audience simply gets to spend time with some great characters, sharing the laughs and wacky situations they get into. Friday is the quintessential hangout movie with its story unfolding over the course of a single lazy day at the end of the week. Ice Cube and Chris Tucker star as two best friends who spend the day smoking weed on the porch, avoiding the dangers of their neighborhood, and trying to meet women.

Like the best hangout movies, Friday is endlessly rewatchable, and simply feels like spending time with some old friends. There is an energy and spark to the movie from director F. Gary Gray, but it is Tucker's breakout role that many people rightly remember best about Friday. He adds something special with his big and hilarious performance every time he is on-screen.

Howard , Robert Weil , Amy Aquino , Tony Azito , Frank Gio , Ann McDonough , John Christopher Jones , Lisa Howard , Cynthia Dale , Anthony Messuri , Martha Collins , John Fanning , Antonia Minella

Runtime 102 minutes

Moonstruck is a brilliant example of how the perfect actors paired with an exceptional script can elevate the comedy genre and create a true classic. Cher delivers her best performance as an actor in this hilarious and smart romantic comedy in which she plays Loretta, a widower who agrees to marry a kind but dull man, only to fall for his estranged and troubled brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage).

Cher won the Oscar for her fiery and hugely entertaining performance that shows the wide range of her talents. The movie also served as a major breakout role for Cage, bringing his signature oddball quality to a more mainstream role, with his performance making Moonstruck even more special. It is a hilarious and surprisingly sweet story of troubled people finding each other that is a madcap comedy with a lot of heart.

8 Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

Slapstick Humor Brings Big Laughs In This Sports Comedy

dodgeball a true underdog story poster

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is a 2004 comedy directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starring Vince Vaughn. Vaughn plays Peter La Fleur, the owner of a struggling gym who has fallen behind on payments. But after White Goodman (Ben Stiller) threatens to buy his competitor's gym, Peter and his gang enter a dodgeball tournament to raise money.

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber

Release Date June 18, 2004

Runtime 92 minutes

There is something about sports stories that lend themselves well to comedy elements, as is showcased in the outrageous comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Vince Vaughn stars as Peter, the lazy owner of a struggling gym that is in danger of being bought by an arrogant fitness mogul, White Goodman (Ben Stiller). However, Peter and his ragtag group of loyal gym patrons discover they can raise the necessary money by winning a dodgeball tournament, with Goodman determined to stop them.

Dodgeball excels because it is the kind of movie that understands how funny it is to see a grown adult getting hit with a dodgeball. The cast of comedic actors plays into the silliness of the movie, with Stiller especially funny as the villain. Rip Torn also steals the show as the cranky coach of the underdogs, hurling wrenches at the players with the reasoning, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."

7 Four Lions (2010)

A Movie That Finds Laughs In Dark Material

Director

Release Date

Cast

Rating

Runtime

It could be argued that some of the best comedies of all time have challenged audiences to find humor in the most unexpected of subjects. That is certainly true of the bold and hilarious Four Lions. The British independent movie stars Riz Ahmed and What We Do in the Shadows cast member Kayvan Novak as two Muslim men with the dream of becoming terrorist jihadists who will carry out an attack on Britain.

Again, it is subject matter that seems the antithesis of comedy, but Four Lions is all the more impressive for finding ways to make it hilarious. Like The Dictator did with Adolf Hitler, Four Lions uses comedy to take power away from those who threaten the world with violence. It is a smart satire that is also thought-provoking while never losing touch with its comedic nature.

6 Bull Durham (1988)

Baseball, Romance, And Comedy Collide

Bull Durham

Veteran catcher Crash Davis is brought to the minor league Durham Bulls to help their up and coming pitching prospect, "Nuke" Laloosh. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start and is further complicated when baseball groupie Annie Savoy sets her sights on the two men.

Director Ron Shelton

Release Date June 15, 1988

Cast Kevin Costner , Susan Sarandon , Tim Robbins , Trey Wilson , Robert Wuhl , William O'Leary

Runtime 108 minutes

Bull Durham is a movie that is able to accomplish a lot. Along with being one of the best comedies on Tubi, it is also a very effective romance story as well as the best baseball movie of all time. Susan Sarandon stars as Annie, a dedicated fan of a minor league baseball team that has a tradition of choosing one player each season to sleep with. Her most recent choice has been narrowed down to the talented but inconsistent hotshot (Tim Robbins) and the veteran on his way out in the sport (Kevin Costner).

The trio of actors brings these characters to life, with Robbins playing the goofball character quite well, as Costner and Sarandon have electrifying chemistry. Before cementing himself with tough guy roles, Costner proves himself a great comedic talent, sharing funny banter with Robbins as he enjoys making a fool out of the arrogant and inexperienced younger player.

5 Bring It On (2000)

A Spirited Look At The World Of Competitive Cheerleading

bring-it-on

As the newly elected captain of her high school's award-winning cheerleading squad, Torrence Shipman aims to take her team to the top of the national championships — despite the challenges of a rival squad, choreography calamities, catty fellow cheerleaders, and romantic entanglements.

Director Peyton Reed

Release Date August 25, 2000

Cast Kirsten Dunst , Eliza Dushku , Jesse Bradford , Gabrielle Union , Clare Kramer , Nicole Bilderback , Ian Roberts

Runtime 99 minutes

Bring It On is a hugely entertaining comedy that finds success in introducing audiences to a niche world. Kirsten Dunst gives a star-making performance in the lead role of Torrance, an ambitious high schooler who has taken over as captain of her cheerleading squad going into her senior year. However, as the big tournament approaches, she discovers that the previous captain stole their routine from a rival school, putting pressure on her to come up with something new.

Director Peyton Reed does a great job of showcasing the wackiness of the cheerleading world while also paying respect to the genuine talent of the athletes involved. Dunst is also key to making the movie work, as her performance is filled with charm and charisma while also being able to show off the goofier side of Torrance's personality.

4 The Apartment (1960)

Billy Wilder's Rom-Com With Originality And Charm

The Apartment (1960) - Poster

Billy Wilder's The Apartment is a comedy-drama film that features Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter, an ambitious office worker who lends his apartment to company executives for extramarital affairs to advance his career.

Director Billy Wilder

Release Date June 15, 1960

Runtime 125 minutes

Billy Wilder is a writer and director of incredible versatility, but there is no denying that he had a particular talent for comedies. The Apartment still ranks as one of his best and one of the most unique rom-coms of all time. Jack Lemon stars in the movie as Baxter, an insurance clerk who finds himself in a position where his various bosses use his apartment to carry out their love affairs with their mistresses. This arrangement is made all the more awkward when Baxter falls for one of said mistresses, Fran (Shirley MacLaine).

Wilder justly won three Oscars for the movie — Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay — marking it as one of his finest movies. Despite The Apartment being over 60 years old, modern audiences will be surprised at how well the sharp and witty dialogue holds up, earning laughs for character interactions rather than obvious set pieces. Lemmon makes for a charming and hilarious put-upon protagonist, while MacLaine sets an archetype for quirky yet alluring romantic leading ladies.

3 Happy Gilmore (1996)

Adam Sandler's Perfect Blend Of Sports Movie And Comedy

Happy Gilmore is a sports comedy that sees the titular Happy adjust to the world of Golf after failing to make it into Hockey. When he finds that his grandmother is nearly about to lose her home, Happy is discovered by a pro golfer who promises to train him to be one of the best after seeing his otherworldly slapshot. What follows is a new take on golf that completely upends the sport by turning it into a hilarious and chaotic spectator sport as this former short-tempered hockey player jumps into the world of professional golf.

Director Dennis Dugan

Release Date February 16, 1996

Runtime 92 minutes

Adam Sandler is one of the biggest comedy movie stars of all time and there are many fans who feel Happy Gilmore is his best movie to date. Sandler stars as the titular character, a short-tempered wannabe hockey player who discovers his real talents are in golf. Desperate to make money in order to save his grandmother's house, he joins the PGA Tour, with his temperamental attitude clashing with the more refined sport.

Happy Gilmore provides a perfect template for Sandler to lean into both his goofy comedic persona and his darker edge. Happy is a deeply flawed guy who is quick to violence, which makes for some of the funniest moments in the movie. The comedic highlight is the frustrated Happy getting into a brutal fistfight with Bob Barker. With Happy Gilmore 2 on the way after nearly three decades, now is the perfect time to revisit the original.

2 The Graduate (1967)

Director Mike Nichols

Release Date December 21, 1967

Cast Dustin Hoffman , Katharine Ross , Murray Hamilton , Anne Bancroft , William Daniels

Runtime 106 minutes

While perhaps not as laugh-out-loud as some of the other funny movies on Tubi, The Graduate is one of the most influential comedies in Hollywood history. Dustin Hoffman stars as a young college graduate who is looking toward his future with no idea of what he is going to do. While aimlessly moving through his summer, he begins an affair with a married woman who is friends with his parents, only to then fall for the woman's daughter.

Coming at an era of change in Hollywood when the movies were aimed at the younger audience, The Graduate provided a hilarious and relatable look at the uncertainty of coming of age. Hoffman's performance is grounded but filled with wonderful comedic tics and quirks as he plays this nervous and unsure young man. It was a movie that spoke to an entire generation while also making them laugh.
