Ten Years Ago, Star Wars Rebels Introduced A Jedi Lightsaber That Obi-Wan Would've Hated

Star Wars Rebels introduced a lightsaber that Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi would hate almost a decade ago. Since 1977 and the first Star Wars movie in release order, lightsabers have been a cornerstone of the franchise. Not only that, but the weapon of the Jedi has become one of the most iconic pieces of iconography in the entire movie industry, with many of Star Wars' lightsaber types being introduced since.

Both the best and worst-ranked Star Wars movies include the lightsaber, proving how much of a mainstay the weapon is within the franchise. However, one Star Wars TV show managed to reinvent the weapon in a way the franchise never had previously. Although Star Wars Rebels immersed itself in the overly recognizable designs and planets of the original trilogy, the animated installment managed to introduce a brand-new style of lightsaber that audiences loved, though that, ironically, Obi-Wan Kenobi would have hated.

Ezra Bridger's Unique Lightsaber Was A Blaster / Lightsaber Hybrid

Star Wars Rebels Introduced A Never-Before-Seen Lightsaber To Canon

Ezra Bridger wielding his Lightsaber Blaster in Star Wars Rebels

The lightsaber in question from Star Wars Rebels belonged to Ezra Bridger and was a hybrid between the iconic laser sword and a Star Wars blaster. This weapon undoubtedly sported one of Star Wars' most unique lightsaber hilts, from the blocky design that enveloped Ezra's hand like the guard of a rapier to the hole on the far side. This hole was not a design flaw, however, and allowed Ezra to shoot out balls of electrified plasma akin to stun bolts from stormtrooper weapons, giving him one of the more distinct lightsaber forms in the Star Wars franchise.

Not only could Ezra use the powerful blade of a Jedi to defeat his enemies, but he could also catch them off guard using ranged attacks. This fitted perfectly with Ezra's introduction as a street rat, scoundrel-like character, as it proved he could fight in an unorthodox way if need be. Humorously, Ezra's lightsaber has a connection to wider Star Wars canon via Obi-Wan Kenobi, as Ezra's lightsaber is not one the Master Jedi would approve of.

Obi-Wan Would've Considered Ezra's Lightsaber To Be "So Uncivilized"

Episodes III & IV Revealed Obi-Wan's Dislike For Blasters

Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi calls a blaster "So uncivilized" on Utapau in Revenge of the Sith

Thanks to what is revealed about Obi-Wan Kenobi's character, he would have found Ezra's blaster-lightsaber uncivilized. In the original Star Wars, Obi-Wan describes lightsabers as an elegant weapon from a more civilized time. In Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, this comment was expanded upon via a great joke during Obi-Wan's battle with General Grievous. After being disarmed by the droid commander, Obi-Wan uses a blaster to defeat him before throwing the weapon away and uttering "So uncivilized."

While audiences may view Ezra's weapon as one of the best Star Wars lightsabers, Kenobi would see it as somewhat of a barbaric update on the classic weapon of the Jedi...

As evident, Kenobi would not be a fan of Ezra Bridger's lightsaber from Star Wars Rebels. While audiences may view Ezra's weapon as one of the best Star Wars lightsabers, Kenobi would see it as somewhat of a barbaric update on the classic weapon of the Jedi. That said, Ezra certainly will not care as the weapon provided him and his fellow Ghost members with a distinct advantage over the agents of the Empire in Star Wars Rebels.
