After a three-year hiatus, Ted Lasso returned with season 4 this year. This time around, the titular character, played by series co-creator and co-showrunner Jason Sudeikis, is coaching the Lady Greyhounds. The season 4 finale was released on October 7, but with the show not officially renewed or canceled yet, the status of a potential season 5 has remained uncertain.
On the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast, Jason Sudeikis said he "would like to" make season 5 happen but clarified that "yeah, I just don’t know. We haven’t started a writers’ room or anything like that." He added that he was not playing coy about the renewal "intentionally" but would “assume” the show will come back if Apple TV and the cast are on board.
This update doesn't mean that Ted Lasso won't be renewed, but with a writers' room not having started yet, it will be a long wait before the show potentially returns, as Sudeikis and the rest of the creative team have not begun establishing the season 5 story and scripts yet. His comments also indicate that no further future has been solidified with Apple TV yet, although he remains optimistic.
Co-creator and co-showrunner Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, previously gave a Ted Lasso season 5 update by explaining that Sudeikis "plays the cards close to his chest, and I’m not privy to whatever poker game that I hope is happening between the powers that be. I think we’ve always basically hoped we were coming back for more than one, but if it ends up just being one, then OK, that’s fine. It did end nicely. We’ll just have to see."
The season 4 finale does deliver a largely conclusive ending with Coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) becoming the new head manager of the Lady Greyhounds, Ted becoming assistant manager so he can be there more for his son, Henry (Grant Feely), Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) retaining majority ownership of A.F.C. Richmond thanks to Mae (Annette Badland), the trio of fans taking over Mae's Crown & Anchor pub, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) accepting the head manager position at Chelsea, and a pregnant Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) moving there with Roy.
As Hunt explained, this is an ending that could work for the series, but he also emphasizes that the hope was to return for more than one season. The Ted Lasso season 3 finale felt even more like a series finale, yet the show still found a way to come back. After a years-long effort to make this happen, it would be surprising to not continue further.
Additionally, except for Coach Chilton, many of the more conclusive endings belong to characters from the first three seasons. New members of the Ted Lasso season 4 cast, especially Coach Chilton and those playing on the Lady Greyhounds team, have only just started their stories, with plenty more left to tell, and the show's new era still in its early days.
Also making a renewal more likely is that Ted Lasso has been number one on Apple TV's global charts throughout season 4's run and even after all episodes were released. It has consistently outperformed many of the platform's other popular shows during this time, including Slow Horses, Silo, Dark Matter, Widow's Bay, Severance, Shrinking, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Brothers. On Rotten Tomatoes, season 4 has a "Certified Fresh" 90% score from critics as well, although it has a series-low audience score of 65%.
