Spoilers for Teacup season 1 are ahead!
Teacup season 1 sets up a horrifying, sci-fi storyline packed with body-jumping aliens and a barrier that melts bodies, leading up to a heartbreaking but exciting ending. The Stephen King-approved horror show follows two rural families who get trapped inside a blue line, learning the horrors that will happen if they try to cross it at the end of Teacup episode 2. After the Chenoweths' 9-year-old son, Arlo, starts acting strange, they discover that he’s possessed by an alien called Harbinger, who is on the run from an evil alien called Assassin.
Harbinger chooses to stay inside Arlo’s body, knowing that the adults will all help protect him, since the way Assassin would kill Harbinger is by murdering Arlo. The families try to discover the identity of the body-jumping alien, keep Arlo alive, and figure out a way out of the horrifying trap. With the help of a man named McNab, who knows many secrets about the aliens, the group finally makes strides in their goals, leading to Teacup’s season 1 ending, which is packed with twists.
Assassin's Death In Teacup Explained
Assassin Is Finally Killed While Inside The Body Of James Chenoweth
In Teacup season 1, Assassin is the main antagonist trying to hunt down Harbinger, and they’re dangerous because they can jump from body to body, pretending to be the host. The show makes it seem like they die if the host body dies with them inside. By the end of the season, the group comes up with a plan to defeat Assassin without killing anyone. They figure that they can drown the host long enough for the alien to die and then administer CPR to revive the host, a massive risk that could easily go wrong.

James and Maggie try to enact this plan once Assassin jumps inside Meryl, wearing gas masks to prevent the alien from possessing them. Unfortunately, in the process of drowning Meryl, James’ mask slips, allowing Assassin to jump into his body. Because they can’t get another shot at drowning Assassin, the group decides to trap James – the host – in the chest freezer, killing him through suffocation. This finally defeats the enemy, who was trying to hunt down Harbinger during Teacup season 1, but his struggles aren’t over. The final scene hints that aliens aligned with Assassin are waking up.
Who Survives The Finale Episode
The Surviving Members Of Teacup Season 1 Escape Through The Barrier
Since Teacup falls into the horror genre, the expectation is that not every character will survive to the end of the season, and the episodes don’t disappoint. Characters die gory deaths when they’re pushed over the blue line, causing their bodies to melt, except for their bones. However, as creator Ian McCulloch explained to Collider, they intentionally didn’t show many grotesque moments onscreen because they didn’t want the moments to lose their effectiveness.
Ultimately, a third of the characters in Teacup – both minor and major – didn’t survive through the end of the season 1 finale. These characters got lucky, making it out alive:
- Maggie Chenoweth
- Arlo Chenoweth
- Meryl Chenoweth
- Ellen Chenoweth
- Nicholas Shanley
- Ruben Shanley
- Donald Kelly
- McNab
- Harbinger
Each family lost at least one member, bringing them closer to their fellow trapped individuals. These characters finally cross the blue line safely. However, the loss of James hits the Chenoweths particularly hard, with Meryl begging Maggie to let him back out of the freezer chest. The death of Valeria Shanley is also rough to watch because Assassin is cruel enough to force her son to push her over the blue line, giving her a gruesome death. In addition to wiping out characters, this action shows how cruel and heartless Assassin is, working only in their best interest.
What The Tree Does In Teacup
The Tree Is The Source Of Teacup's Trap
Peacock’s Teacup introduces a mysterious, decrepit-looking tree with magical properties on the farm. People can’t touch the tree under typical circumstances; they are only able to touch the branch after consuming a small amount of rainbow liquid poison. It turns out that the tree in Teacup causes the forcefield that Assassin needs to keep the humans and Harbinger inside. It cannot be burnt down, either, giving it supernatural abilities.
Ultimately, the last two episodes of Teacup reveal that the tree is the source of the poison, which is why Ruben Shanley can only touch it after drinking the rainbow liquid. Luckily, there’s just enough left for him to break off one of the branches. When placing it into a jar, the branch melts down into the poison, giving the group enough to escape the blue line barrier safely.
What Harbinger's Drawing & What It Means
Harbinger In Arlo's Body Keeps Drawing The Same Jagged Line
In Teacup episodes 5 and 6, Harbinger reveals that he needs to turn on some sort of machine, seemingly to prevent a massive alien invasion. However, he doesn’t provide any details about the location of the machine. During the finale of Peacock’s Teacup, Harbinger, in Arlo’s body, starts drawing a jagged blue line on a piece of paper, repeating the same pattern over and over. There’s no context on the page as to what the drawing means.

Since Harbinger’s an alien who speaks a foreign language, this could be written text or some kind of foreign symbol. It’s unclear at first how the drawing will help them. Luckily, Meryl helps Arlo figure out what the drawing means. When placing the drawing over a map of the United States, they figure out that the blue line is the route that Harbinger needs to take to reach the machine. After they finally escape Assassin’s trap, the group plans to travel along the map route.
What Are Hayden And Izzy (& How They Set Up Teacup Season 2)
The End Of Teacup Season 1 Introduces Two New Faces
In the final moments of Peacock’s Teacup, the group comes face to face with a person named Hayden wearing a gas mask and someone called Izzy with a megaphone and gun. The pair run over McNab’s friends, who sleeper assassin aliens supposedly possess. They then hop out and threaten the surviving characters. Hayden and Izzy offer to help them get where they’re going but require them to use zip ties and ketamine to prevent any unknown assassins from harming the group.
If the group decides to go with the mysterious pair at the start of Teacup season 2, they could either have new allies or secret enemies who are trying to prevent Harbinger’s goal.
Though Hayden and Izzy present themselves as the good guys, it’s unknown whether they’re telling the truth. If the group decides to go with the mysterious pair at the start of Teacup season 2, they could either have new allies or secret enemies who are trying to prevent Harbinger’s goal. Only time will tell whether Hayden and Izzy are actually the good guys in this situation.
The Real Meaning Of Teacup Season 1's Ending
Teacup's Ending Shows That Not Everyone Can Survive
The ending of Teacup season 1 is pretty bleak, killing three different characters within the two-part finale. The show sends the message that not everyone can survive a horrible situation, and sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the better good. The utilitarian perspective of Teacup could change to a more hopeful tone going into a second season as the group fights to save the world from an alien invasion. However, characters will still likely get sacrificed to achieve the common goal, furthering the real message of the first season of Teacup.
