TCL Touts Precise Dimming with QM6K, Teases More Mini LED TVs Soon

1 week ago 12

CES is a big deal for big screens, and many TV makers, including Samsung and LG, use the convention to debut their best 2025 models. TCL, which makes some of our favorite TVs for the money, is saving its best for some time later in 2025.

TCL did announce one new midrange model however, and unlike most CES TV's it's available for preorder and shipping soon. Called the QM6K, it's the first to use the company's suite of improved "Precise Dimming" Mini-LED tech. It combines a new Mini-LED chip, lens, processing, better quantum dots and other enhancements that TCL says reduce blooming and improve other aspects of image quality.

The price of the QM6K is similar to that of TCL's current QM8 – one of our favorite TVs for the money. It will come in 50-inch ($750), 55-inch ($800), 65-inch ($1,000), 75-inch ($1,300), 85-inch ($1,999) and 98-inch ($3,500) sizes. Judging from their specifications, the 50- and 55-inch QM6K models could be among the best performers for the money at those sizes. The QM6K is billed as "affordable premium" and offers standard midpriced TV features like 144Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and the Google TV smart system, just like the QM8.

I got the chance to check out the 98-inch QM6K at TCL's demo suite at CES and it looked impressive. I also noticed that the screen has a relatively matte finish, which should help reduce reflections but may also diminish contrast (similar to Samsung's glare-free OLED). Of course it was impossible to really tell in that environment how it compares against other like-priced models. To do that we'll need to review it at CNET's TV lab.

Beyond the QM6K, TCL says it will announce more QD-Mini LED TVs with better performance sometime later in 2025. In fact, I saw a couple of them in person, in the QM7K series at 98-inch and 115-inch sizes. They will have more local dimming zones, higher brightness, wider viewing angles and improved antiglare technology, but TCL didn't provide model numbers, additional sizes or more details. It says those announcements are coming later this year.
