Taylor Sheridan has managed to expand his Yellowstone franchise into a sprawling television empire, encompassing several prequel and sequel spinoffs in addition to the original series. The two sequel shows to have debuted in 2026 so far have split the lives of the surviving children of John Dutton into entirely separate stories.
However, the latest plot development in Paramount+’s Dutton Ranch episode 6 suggests the time is right for Beth to cross over into Kayce’s territory, on the CBS show Marshals. Both spinoffs share a subplot they inherited from the final season of Yellowstone itself. It feels as though neither can resolve this subplot without the help of the other.
Although Marshals has its own season 1 cliffhanger to sort out before bringing Beth and Rip back into the fray, the loose plot thread concerning the “disappearance” of Jamie Dutton is ripe for exploring. Neither of the remaining Dutton siblings will be able to sleep soundly until this loose end is tied up.
Dutton Ranch Has Revealed Beulah Jackson Knows About Jamie Dutton
The latest episode of Dutton Ranch season one reveals that Beulah Jackson knows the secret behind Jamie Dutton’s disappearance. Even if she isn’t aware of the details, she’s clocked that Beth and Rip are involved, which is why they’ve fled their old life in Montana and relocated to Texas.
This revelation doesn’t just complicate the storylines ongoing with Dutton Ranch itself. It also raises the specter of Yellowstone’s bloody finale, in which the sibling rivalry between Beth and Jamie spilled over into a physical conflict that proved fatal for the latter.
Beulah is unlikely to share her suspicions about what’s happened to Jamie with authorities at this stage. More likely, she will try to use what she’s found out as leverage against Beth and Rip when required. Then again, it tends not to end well for those who threaten the Dutton family.
Marshals And Dutton Ranch Are Both Haunted By Jamie’s Ghost
As much as they have their own internal plot dynamics, both Dutton Ranch and its fellow Yellowstone spinoff Marshals have the dark cloud of Jamie Dutton’s death hanging over them. While this event has now come back to haunt Beth in her dealings with Beulah, Kayce is also repeatedly confronted with questions about Jamie’s whereabouts in Marshals.
Marshal Service intelligence agent Andrea Cruz seems particularly suspicious about what’s happened, and repeatedly grills the show’s protagonist about his missing brother. Things almost come to a head when the team heads to Montana’s “Zone of Death” for a drug bust in Marshals episode 2.
The “Zone of Death” turns out to be another name for the “Train Station” where the Duttons and their enforcers buried those they killed, leaving Kayce incredibly uneasy about the possibility of his dead brother’s body – among others – being discovered there. The ghost of Jamie Dutton simply won’t leave either Kayce or Beth alone.
Jamie’s Disappearance Could Be The Basis For A Yellowstone Crossover
The resolution of this unsettling subplot is the perfect excuse for a Yellowstone reunion, in the form of a crossover between the show’s two sequel spinoffs. Beth Dutton actor Kelly Reilly has already raised the possibility of a crossover between Dutton Ranch and Marshals, although no one on the production side of either show has followed up her comments.
We might have to wait some time for the Jamie Dutton subplot to become central to the plot of these two spinoffs, as it appears to be the intention of their respective writers to milk the dramatic irony for all its worth. Nevertheless, a storyline involving Beth, Rip and Kayce all working together to cover their tracks doesn’t feel very far away.
The amount that Jamie is already being mentioned in Marshals, alongside Beulah’s ominous warning in Dutton Ranch, implies that the net might be closing in on the Duttons. This loose end has been carried over from Yellowstone for a reason, and it’s only a matter of time before those scripting the spinoffs decide to use it.
