Taylor Sheridan's Western crime thriller walks up to another streaming home.
Sheridan is one of the most in-demand creators in Hollywood, being responsible for a new wave of Western releases. The writer has worked on several successful movies and TV shows in the past few years. Among Sheridan's best TV shows are Westerns like Yellowstone and 1923, crime thrillers like Mayor of Kingstown, spy thrillers like Lioness, and many more. On the movie side, Sheridan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards for his work on the acclaimed Hell or High Water, which stands alongside a new Hulu arrival on Sheridan's long list of projects.
Hulu has announced that Sheridan's Sicario is going to arrive on the streaming service on May 1. The Western crime thriller is one of the many films being released on the streamer when May begins. Some other releases include everything from fantasy franchises like Disney's Descendants to iconic comedies like Bride Wars to sci-fi masterpieces like Star Wars' original trilogy to spy thrillers like The King's Man and many more. Sicario's Hulu arrival is likely to continue Sheridan's streak of hits on different streaming services.
Released on September 18, 2015, Sicario is easily one of the most important releases in Sheridan's career. The reason for that is that the R-rated crime thriller was the first movie that Sheridan got to write. With a reported budget of $30 million, Sicario needed to finish its box office run in the $60 million to $75 million range. The film managed to turn a profit for the studio, as Sicario left theaters after grossing $84.8 million worldwide. The R-rated crime thriller's positive box office run was aided by how well Sicario landed with critics and moviegoers alike.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Sicario stands at a near-perfect 91% critics' score based on 279 reviews, which is a major feat. The thriller's audience score is also positive, currently at 85%. Sicario was packed with talent both in front of and behind the cameras. Written by Sheridan, the Western crime thriller was directed by none other than Denis Villeneuve. The director recently became famous for spearheading the global hit sci-fi franchise Dune, with the trilogy coming to an end this December when Dune: Part Three releases in theaters. Villeneuve's work on Sicario is more akin to Prisoners and Enemy than Dune.
Sicario's star-studded cast includes names like Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, Daniel Kaluuya, and more. The R-rated crime thriller focuses on Blunt's Kate Mercer, an FBI Special Agent breaking through a field dominated by men, on the assignment of a lifetime — joining a task force to take down a cartel. However, the methods to do so are darker and more illegal than she could have anticipated, with tensions escalating as she has to work with del Toro's Alejandro Gillick, a former hitman who worked for the cartel.
After Sicario's success, a sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, was released in theaters on June 29, 2018. The film brought back multiple cast members from the Sheridan-written crime thriller, such as del Toro, Brolin, and Jeffrey Donovan. In ScreenRant's Sicario review, Kofi Outlaw gave the movie a 9 out of 10 score. On May 1, Hulu subscribers will get to watch Sicario for the first time.
