Taylor Sheridan Finds A Way To Tell The Story Of Controversially Scrapped Yellowstone Spinoff

The expansion of the Yellowstone universe has produced more than one successful spinoff, and the Taylor Sheridan universe is continuing to forge ahead in a creative way with a character viewers didn’t necessarily anticipate seeing again. While shows like 1883 and 1923 initially shed light on the Dutton family’s past, Yellowstone and its sequels, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, built up the family and continue to explore their lore. While there was another Yellowstone project in the works, 6666, the series never materialized despite being announced in 2021. Poised to explore the Four Sixes Ranch, it would continue Jimmy Hurdstrom’s story.

Jimmy (Jefferson White) was a character who went through a major transformation throughout his time on Yellowstone, going from a troubled ranch hand to a legitimate cowboy during the show’s run. As someone who viewers grew to enjoy, seeing Jimmy move forward on Yellowstone was a major part of the show’s fourth and fifth seasons, where he began working at the Four Sixes and learned the sense of discipline that changed his life. After the plug was pulled on 6666, many were curious if they would ever get the chance to see Jimmy again.

With the details surrounding Jimmy’s return fairly secretive, it appears that the character will be coming to Marshals season 2 as a part of the season’s ongoing story, which could mean an interesting shift for Kayce is coming in future episodes. Why Yellowstone Spinoff 6666 Was Cancelled

With other Yellowstone spinoffs having come to life fairly easily both during the show’s run and in its aftermath, the fact that 6666 was cancelled hit hard for the franchise. Even stranger was that the series was pulled from the air after spending years in active development, originally as a part of the expansion strategy for Yellowstone as a franchise universe. Rather than originally planning to focus on prequels that highlighted the Dutton family exclusively, Sheridan’s vision for the Yellowstone franchise featured more of a shared universe, much like the other franchises on network TV in the currently airing era.

With Jimmy headed for Four Sixes Ranch, it felt like the perfect way to expand the universe while keeping the disruption surrounding Yellowstone itself to a minimum. It seemed like even though 6666 was put on hold, it would likely still happen, even after Yellowstone came to an end and its current network spinoffs, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, were expanding the universe through the Dutton family. Sheridan cleared things up from a creative perspective, explaining that though the series was part of the franchise’s long-term plans, Four Sixes being a working ranch made things more difficult for the fictional world.

While Jimmy’s relocation to Texas and the fact that he was working as part of Four Sixes was still part of his Yellowstone story, the story didn’t seem to feel as authentic as time passed. Instead of forcing a series that may or may not work, 6666 quietly faded into the background, and Jimmy’s story got the chance to blossom elsewhere.

What To Expect From Jimmy's Marshals Debut

Although there hasn’t been a ton of information revealed about what’s to come for Jimmy as he begins his time on Marshals, there are a few clues about what could come to pass within the series. Throughout Yellowstone’s run, Kayce and Jimmy’s relationship became one that viewers were endeared to rather quickly. Kayce often treated Jimmy with patience and understanding, even more than he did with many other characters on the series. Both experienced personal reinvention during the show’s run, which makes their reunion on Marshals something that viewers should look forward to even more knowing how much has changed.

Jimmy’s return to Montana after leaving the Duttons for Texas is also another thing that Marshals season 2 is likely to explore.
