Tata signs MoU with ASML to develop semiconductor ecosystem in India

Tata Electronics and ASML, the Dutch company that holds a near-monopoly on the lithography machines needed to manufacture advanced semiconductors, have signed a memorandum of understanding to build out India’s chip manufacturing ecosystem. The deal revolves around a new 300 mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, a facility that represents roughly $11 billion in planned investment.

What the deal actually covers

The MoU goes beyond a straightforward equipment purchase order. ASML will supply advanced lithography tools and solutions to the Dholera facility, but the partnership also includes collaboration on training local talent and building supply chain resilience within India.

The Dholera fab is being positioned as India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor front-end facility. The chips produced at this facility are expected to target automotive, mobile device, and AI applications.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, a level of political attention that underscores how seriously both governments are treating the semiconductor supply chain question.
