Taika Waititi's new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake for Netflix has officially been unveiled.
The creative's new animated project has been revealed by the streaming service, alongside a confirmed release window for the movie. There have been a number of new projects connected to the character of Willy Wonka in recent years, from the 2017 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Broadway musical, to the critically acclaimed Wonka prequel movie.
Now, Netflix has announced Waititi will star in Netflix's new, animated Willy Wonka movie, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Waititi will star in the movie as Willy Wonka, while Kit Connor will star as Charlie Paley. The movie comes from directors Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, who've created a new vision for the story of Charlie and Willy Wonka.
The movie is set in modern day London and takes place after the Golden Ticket contest from the original story. Wonka has been serving jail time for turning Violet Beauregarde into a blueberry, and, following his release, goes back to his factory. However, Charlie and his friends have since taken it over, staging a heist in hopes of helping their families.
Check out the full synopsis below:
Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of “rotten” kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew...
In addition to Waititi's starring role in the movie, he also serves as executive producer. The movie comes from Sony Pictures Imageworks animation studio, best known for the wildly successful KPop Demon Hunters, as well as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse. A first look image was also released, teasing what to expect from the movie:
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will be released on Netflix in 2027.
Netflix acquired Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, gaining the rights to all of Dahl's many books to adapt for the streaming platform. In a joint statement, Stern and Bogan explained their vision for the story and how it maintains the magic of the original vision of Willy Wonka, through both its story and animated presentation:
Having been raised on the delightfully twisted world of Willy Wonka, it’s a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults. And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!
In addition, stars Connor and Waititi also released statements explaining their excitement for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Connor explains how he was drawn by Stern and Bogan's vision for the story alongside the modern London approach, while Waititi is excited to add to Willy Wonka's legacy by providing him a voice in the project:
Kit Connor: I'm so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. I was immediately caught by the early concept art, and the directors’ vision for the film - capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique. It’s such a fun representation of the London that I know. This new adventure is going to surprise audiences around the world, you’re in for a treat!
Taika Waititi: Our directors, Jared and Elaine, have a bold vision befitting this new adventure whilst remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I'm thrilled to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form. He is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius—if a little mischievous at times—is hugely exciting.
Netflix Animation Studios' Head of Feature Animation and Family Film Hannah Minghella says the movie is set to introduce Willy Wonka's story to a new generation of kids, while also maintaining what makes the original version by Dahl so special:
With their singular comedic and visual flair, Jared and Elaine have concocted a delightful adventure that remains true to the spirit of Dahl's beloved novel while imagining a brand new story that introduces this world to a new generation. We can't wait for audiences around the world to experience the magic and mayhem for themselves when the film comes out next year.
The announcement of Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory comes after Netflix announced The Golden Ticket, a reality TV show inspired by Dahl's original work. It will be the first animated film adaptation only pulling from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while also being the first big project for the IP after Netflix's acquisition.
With Waititi bringing Willy Wonka to life, the movie appears poised to introduce the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to a new audience, while also maintaining attributes of the original to draw an older crowd. The animated adventure promises plenty of heart akin to Dahl's source material, while standing uniquely on its own as a Netflix animated production.
