Swansea City have completed the signing of Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio from FC Porto, bringing a player with 157 appearances at one of Europe’s most decorated clubs to the English Championship. The deal, announced on August 27, puts Eustáquio on a two-year contract with an option for a third year.
The transfer fee is reported to be approximately €4 million, roughly $4.3 million, with performance-related add-ons that could push the total to €5.65 million. Porto also secured a 10% sell-on clause.
From World Cup captain to Championship newcomer
Eustáquio is not your typical second-tier signing. The 29-year-old midfielder has 61 senior international caps for Canada and wore the captain’s armband during the 2026 World Cup, which was co-hosted on Canadian soil.
Eustáquio’s standing at Porto deteriorated sharply over the past year, culminating in a stretch where he logged exactly one minute across three league appearances in the early part of 2026. In 2025, Porto loaned him to LAFC in Major League Soccer, where he made 10 appearances.
Over his full Porto career, Eustáquio contributed 11 goals and 12 assists across 157 appearances.
What Swansea gets
Swansea finished 11th in the Championship last season. Recent player departures in midfield, specifically Ethan Galbraith and Malick Yalcouye, made the need for reinforcement pressing.
Negotiations moved quickly. Talks reportedly began on August 25, and Eustáquio completed his medical shortly after, wrapping up the formalities within roughly 48 hours. He’s been assigned the number 46 shirt and is expected to be available for Swansea’s upcoming Championship fixture against Derby County.
Matos, Swansea’s head coach, shares a background in the Portuguese footballing system, which may smooth Eustáquio’s transition given his development through Portuguese youth football and his years at Porto.
A calculated gamble for both sides
For Swansea, the financial structure of the deal makes it relatively low-risk. A base fee of around €4 million for a player with his experience is modest by modern transfer standards. The add-ons and sell-on clause mean Porto retains upside if Eustáquio thrives. Two years with an option for a third gives Swansea enough time to evaluate the signing without being locked into long-term wages if the move doesn’t work out.
