Supergirl Striking a Pose Next to Lobo DC Featured

Don't be surprised by Lobo's casting for the new Supergirl film, as he was actually meant to be a big part of the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Jason Momoa's casting has sent the internet into a frenzy, but it turns out that Lobo was once a part of Kara Zor-El's masterpiece story.

It was roughly a year ago when James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, revealed that one of the first films their studio would be putting out would be an adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. After the news hit, writer Tom King spoke with the podcast Word Balloon.

"That book [Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow] began as me pitching a Lobo [and] Supergirl book. It was my editor[s], Brittany Holzherr and Jamie Rich, who were like ‘No, take Lobo out and make Supergirl the Rooster Cogburn character.'" It wouldn’t exist without Jamie and Brittany.”

During the interview, King spoke about the origins of his series and made the shocking reveal that it began with him pitching a story about Supergirl and Lobo traveling together. However, Lobo's inclusion was cut out, forcing King to rework his story into what became Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Lobo Was Originally Part of Tom King's Vision for His Supergirl Story

It's taken a while, but Gunn and Safran's new DCU is finally getting the ball rolling. Not only is Creature Commandos making waves among fans, but the trailer for Gunn's Superman trailer has been a smash hit online, racking up record-breaking numbers in mere days. Fans are also starting to hear developments on projects that won't even be seen for a few years, like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. News of the project had been quiet for some time, but fans rejoiced when it was announced that Lobo was going to be part of the film and played by Jason Momoa.

It shouldn't come as a shock that Lobo would be appearing in this film. Tom King has been working with DC Studios on Lanterns show as a producer and Gunn has previously praised King's work. It's not unlikely that King told Gunn what his initial vision for the comic was and Gunn is interested in producing a film that's more like what King had in mind. It'll be interesting to see how this changes the story when the film comes around, but it will be nice to see a more realized vision of what Tom King wanted in his story.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a Chance to Make a Great Story Even Better

Lobo's Inclusion Could Inject a Real Wildcard Factor

It could be seen as a risky move to include Lobo, especially when many loved Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as it was. But King's initial concept never got a chance to live and there's a chance his original idea might have been even better than what fans already read. Plus, the film adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has a lot of great talent involved, including writer Ana Nogueira. Bringing Lobo into the equation is a chance to see just what the Main Man would have brought to one of the greatest Supergirl stories in modern years.
