The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is flying past the stars to a certain destination.
Mario is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable characters in the world. Due to that, it is no surprise that the two recent animated Super Mario movies have been such huge box office hits. 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie went on to gross a whopping $1.3 billion worldwide, resulting in a major win for the studio compared to its relatively low reported budget of $100 million. Now, having racked up $942 million during its theatrical run and still counting, its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is already preparing to find success in another format.
According to Amazon Prime Video, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released on digital PVOD on May 18 at 9 p.m. PT/May 19 at 12 a.m. ET. The animated film is already available to pre-order. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie landed in theaters on April 1. That would mean that the global smash hit is now flying onto digital exactly 47 days after its theatrical release. At the time of writing, it has yet to be revealed when audiences will be able to watch Mario's latest big-screen adventure on streaming, without having to buy or rent the movie.
© Universal Pictures / Courtesy Everett CollectionThe original entry in the animated franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was released in theaters on April 5, 2023. It would later arrive on digital on May 16. That adds up to a 41-day window between the original movie debuting in theaters and on digital, which is only slightly shorter than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's 47-day release window between the two formats. As such, it is clear that the franchise is continuing to employ the winning formula that led to audiences being so enamored with the animated world that they returned in strong numbers for the sequel.
As its title suggests, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie widened the scope of the franchise, taking the action to the cosmos, as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and others ventured into space to discover different worlds. Those waiting to watch the movie at home will soon be able to explore what those wondrous new locations entail, as well as get a look at new characters, such as Glen Powell's Fox McCloud, Brie Larson's Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and more. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie landed well with viewers.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie does not hold the best critics' score, currently at a low 42% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes based on 215 reviews, the animated sequel has fared much better with the audience, standing tall at a mighty 88% score from moviegoers. In ScreenRant's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review, critic Jordan Williams gave the hit movie a 5 out of 10 score, claiming it was fun in a chaotic way and had good animation, but also brought back all the problems seen in the original movie. A sequel to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected.
