And yet, it's been nearly 10 years since the last proper 3D Super Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey. The 2017 platformer remains a genuine 10/10 masterpiece, but the Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to get its own Mario adventure. Fortunately, any fans out there wanting their 3D Mario fix should know that anything that Nintendo won't do, the fans are more than willing to step up and provide.
Created by JackTheGothGuy, Super Mario 64: Galactic Adventure is an incredible fan game that takes the Super Mario 64 engine and incorporates gameplay elements from the Super Mario Galaxy games. The result is a cosmic adventure that feels old and new all at once. A remake and demake rolled all into one, this project basically asks the question: what if Nintendo made Super Mario Galaxy for the N64? Mind you, that doesn't mean Galactic Adventure is just a low-poly version Super Mario Galaxy: this new fan game has brand-new levels, gameplay mechanics, and plenty of other surprises. It's currently scheduled to release in December 2026, and it looks like an absolute blast.
Given the huge success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it's a little surprising Nintendo still hasn't caved in and given us Super Mario Galaxy 3. Although, to be fair, this is a company that prefers to push forward and try new things rather than revisit past glories. You know, if we don't count the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Ultimately, then, any gamers out there who want to experience a brand-new Super Mario Galaxy game should definitely keep an eye on this project. The fact it manages to combine both the aesthetic of Super Mario 64 and the sheer invention of Super Mario Galaxy means this could be one of the most impressive Mario fan games ever made. And, as we continue to wait for news on the next official 3D Super Mario, you'll want to take whatever you can get your hands on.
