UPDATED with new trailer: The final trailer for Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary, adapted from Andy Weir’s best-selling 2021 novel, has blasted off. The film lands in theaters March 20.
The trailer, promoted by Gosling throwing a neon green football through the donut hole of the structure atop Randy’s Donuts in Los Angeles, gives viewers a solid glimpse of the alien Rocky, who encounters Gosling’s character in space. They team up because they are after the same answers.
Set to Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U,” the clip shows man and alien species learning to communicate through a fancy device Gosling’s astronaut uses to decipher Rocky’s language and mode of communication. Then he assigns him a voice, and they form a close bond.
As previous clips have teased, Ryan Gosling’s Grover Cleveland Middle School teacher Ryland Grace, who casually possesses a doctorate in molecular biology, is recruited to save Earth from a dying sun in this science fiction adventure story.
When Sandra Hüller’s scientist tells him that every star in the galaxy is dying except one, Gosling’s Grace hesitates to join a last prayer mission to save Earth.
“I put the ‘not’ in ‘astronaut’,” he tries to tell a team of scientists in a snippet released last June.
The second trailer, released Nov. 19, 2025, picked up where the first left off, with one of Rocky the alien’s appendages knocking on glass to say hi to Gosling’s Grace. Turns out they are on the same mission, to save their respective heliocentric stars.
The film’s screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse) directed the ambitious adaptation.
Songs featured in trailers so far include Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” and Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova.”
PREVIOUS, Nov. 19: Ahead of a March 2026 release in theaters and Imax, Amazon MGM Studios has dropped the second trailer for Project Hail Mary, the Phil Lord and Chris Miller sci-fi thriller that stars Ryan Gosling.
A reteaming of The Martian author Andy Weir and that film’s screenwriter Drew Goddard, Project Hail Mary centers on Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Soon his solo mission becomes clear: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He then meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.
The new trailer lays out the stakes and introduces the alien, who Ryland dubs Rocky. Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” plays in the background.
Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub also star. The movie hits theaters and Imax on March 20, 2026.

PREVIOUSLY, June 30: Amazon MGM has released the first trailer for Project Hail Mary.
The sci-fi thriller stars Ryan Gosling, who plays a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.
The Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed space adventure is based on the Andy Weir bestseller of the same name.
Amazon MGM showed footage from the film at their CinemaCon presentation in April. Gosling was present and called the film an “insanely ambitious story, massive in scope.” It was so big, “we tried to put it on a TV once, it wouldn’t fit,” he said.
Also starring in the film are Sandra Huller and Milana Vayntrub. Producers are Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, Ken Kao, and Weir. Oscar-winning Dune DP Greig Fraser is the cinematographer. Executive producers are Lucy Kitada and Nikki Baida via Lord Miller; Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Ken Kao, and Patty Whitcher.
Amazon MGM Studios has set a March 20, 2026 release.
