It’s been over two years since the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt sequel, New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was announced, and there’s finally a full trailer for the series. While Panty & Stocking was originally a Studio Gainax property, in 2022, it was announced that Studio Trigger, staffed by its creators, had regained the rights to the series and was developing a sequel, with said sequel set to premiere sometime in 2025.
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is one of the most highly anticipated anime of 2025, and there’s now even more reason to be excited about it. Studio Trigger has finally released a full trailer for the series, and while not much has been revealed, the first official trailer for New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt shows that it will be just as exciting and absurd as the original series, if not more so. What little has been shown is promising a lot for the series, and hopefully, it will deliver on all fronts in 2025.
Panty & Stocking’s New Trailer Hints At A Team-Up Of Its Heroes & Villains
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt’s trailer doesn’t directly lay out its plot, but it might have spoiled more than it let on. The trailer is filled with scenes of Panty and Stocking fighting Scanty and Kneesocks, but one of the trailer’s final shots was framed like the four of them were working together against a threat, so the premise of New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt might revolve around Panty and Stocking having to work together with Scanty and Kneesocks. The groups don’t look particularly happy about the arrangement, but even that promises an interesting dynamic in the show proper.
As for why they would be working together, that probably stems from the big plot twist with Stocking in the original series. The original series had one of the most infamous Gainax endings in anime with Stocking randomly killing Panty and revealing herself to be a demon, and as bizarre as that was, New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt might have the characters working together because of the twist of Stocking being a demon. That would be a great way of building off such an infamously bizarre ending, and it would be interesting if the series ends up going that way.
Will New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt Acknowledge The First Anime’s Ending?
Is The Original Panty & Stocking Anime's Ending Still Canon?
Regarding the twist ending of Panty & Stocking, that begs the question of whether New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt will acknowledge it. Not only is Panty clearly alive in the trailer, but there’s no animosity between Panty and Stocking besides a single scene where Panty tells Stocking to die, but it’s not as if the two weren’t prone to fights in the original series before the twist. Because of that, it’s unclear if Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt’s twist ending will be addressed in the sequel, whether that’s because it’s been retconned or because the sequel decides to simply ignore it.
Neither option would be a detriment to the series, of course. Panty & Stocking has always been an incredibly absurdist series to the point that its ending feels deliberately nonsensical, and because of that, New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt going so far as to ignore the original anime’s ending would be perfectly in line with its style of comedy. All of that is hypothetical, of course, but hopefully, it won’t be long before New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt makes it clear what direction its undeniably fantastic story will be heading in.
