Ever since Stranger Things ended with its final season earlier this year, fans have been looking for something new to fill the supernatural void left behind. Its blend of small-town horror, coming-of-age drama, '80s nostalgia, and unlikely heroes proved difficult to replicate, especially for viewers who became attached to Hawkins and its many mysteries. Thankfully, several projects have taken on the challenge, offering players a chance to step into eerie worlds filled with monsters, hidden secrets, and retro-inspired charm.

Stranger Things fans looking for something truly original to fill the void are in luck, as this new horror RPG on Steam is an absolute must-play, with 80s-inspired VHS aesthetics, turn-based multiplayer mechanics, and Disco Elysium vibes to boot. The game just released on August 28 and is absolutely worth checking out if you're looking for something new to try this weekend.

Stranger Things Vibes Are Heavy In This New Steam Horror

Board Game Society is a newly released 80s-VHS-inspired turn-based RPG that puts players on the board in a tabletop-style horror experience that's available to play now. The game features "a misfit crew of teen archetypes such as the goth, the jock, the nerd, and more as you explore the cursed forest of Timber Falls." Players will "roll the dice to fight monsters, collect loot, and race to defeat the Boss," and can even let their friends join for free with a special Friends Pass offer that's available on Steam now.

The premise should feel immediately familiar to Stranger Things fans, with Timber Falls hiding haunted graveyards, supernatural threats, and other dark secrets behind its nostalgic '80s setting. Rather than following a traditional RPG structure, however, Board Game Society is played on a "physical" board, with players moving between different areas, fighting dangerous enemies, and hunting down hidden crystals required to reach the final battle. The tougher the monster, the better the potential rewards, adding a risk-reward element to each run.

There's also more going on than simple cooperative monster hunting, with Board Game Society supporting both PvE and PvP multiplayer, allowing players to compete against one another while working toward the same ultimate objective.

Only one player can ultimately claim victory, creating a mixture of cooperation and competition that fits the tabletop vibe well. The game additionally features custom cards, character skin customization, multiple levels and regularly occuring events, turn-based combat, and procedurally generated elements as well.

Developed and published by Jetebra Games, Board Game Society officially launched on Steam at roughly $15, with a 10% launch discount through September 4. However, the separate Board Game Society – FriendsPass page on Steam lets a friend download the game for free, giving players an easier way to bring others along for the unique "tabletop" adventure.
