Steven Spielberg Achieves EGOT Status After First Grammy Win

Steven Spielberg's five-decade creative partnership with composer John Williams continues to bear fruit in new and exciting ways.

Spielberg became an EGOT Feb. 1 during the pre-televised portion of the 2026 Grammys with his win for Best Music Film, having served as a producer on the 2024 documentary Music by John Williams. (See all the 2026 Grammy winners.)

“Thank you to all the Grammy voters, whose recognition of Music by John Williams means the world to me and our Amblin team, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and congratulations to our partners at Imagine and the Walt Disney Company,” the 79-year-old filmmaker said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled. I am proud to be associated with [director Laurent Bouzereau's] beautiful film.”

Spielberg's first Grammy makes him the 22nd person to have won at least one competitive honor from the Recording Academy, as well as an Oscar, Emmy and a Tony. (Otherwise, he's the 28th, including artists who've won honorary awards.)

Though, in Spielberg's case, make that four Emmys as a producer (The PacificBand of BrothersSteven Spielberg Presents: A Pinky & The Brain Christmas and Steven Spielberg Presents Taken), three Oscars (for producing and directing Schindler's List, as well as directing Saving Private Ryan) and a Tony as a producer of Strange Loop.

He and Williams have been working together for more than 50 years, their first collaboration being 1974's Sugarland Express, Spielberg's feature directing debut. Williams, 93, wrote the iconic music for classics including JawsClose Encounters of the Third KindRaiders of the Lost ArkE.T.Empire of the SunHookJurassic ParkSchindler's List and much more. (Not to mention, his non-Spielberg credits include the theme from Star Wars and a few other familiar ditties.)

“John is much more of a chameleon as a composer,” Spielberg told the Los Angeles Times in 2012, reflecting on their decades working together.” “He reinvents himself with every picture."

The small EGOT club, meanwhile, includes Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jennifer Hudson, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn and The Book of Mormon composer Robert Lopez, who, incidentally, is the only person to win each kind of award that makes up an EGOT twice.
