Stephen King hints at new The Dark Tower stories while Mike Flanagan's adaptation continues to take shape. The final book in the series, The Dark Tower, was published in 2004, although King later published an eighth novel, The Wind Through the Keyhole, which takes place between the fourth and fifth installments. Flanagan's Dark Tower adaptation series was confirmed in 2022 in the aftermath of the poor reception to The Dark Tower movie adaptation released in 2017, which starred Idris Elba.
On X (formerly Twitter), King has now teased that he is working on new Dark Tower stories as he reveals that he is "back in Mid-World...and the Territories." Check out his post below:
King admits that he does not know what this will amount to, but he expresses his enthusiasm at returning to the universe of The Dark Tower. The tease also includes a shirt that reads, "All things serve the f***** Beam," which is a different quote from the series, and a reference to the Beams that hold up the Dark Tower.
What This Means For The Dark Tower
The Stephen King Universe Has More Stories To Tell
While King's latest venture is in the early stages, the Dark Tower universe is poised to further expand. This potential expansion will not only include Mid-World, the primary setting of The Dark Tower series where the protagonist Roland Deschain comes from, but also the Territories, the parallel dimension in The Talisman and Black House that is part of The Dark Tower's multiverse. This presents many intriguing possibilities, including more exploration of one of Stephen King's best villains, the Crimson King, who is integral to The Dark Tower and to Black House.

Mike Flanagan's TV adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series needs to feature several key moments from the books in order to do the story right.
These new stories are presumably unrelated to Flanagan's upcoming series, which will adapt the original seven Dark Tower books. Depending on what the focus is of the new stories, Flanagan could incorporate certain elements into the streaming series adaptation of Roland and his ka-tet journeying to the Dark Tower. This could work if the new stories provide more insight into Roland's backstory in Mid-World before the beginning of The Gunslinger or about the far-reaching evil of the Crimson King.
Our Take On Stephen King's Dark Tower Tease
The Dark Tower's Inffluence Remains Strong
As a fan of The Dark Tower books, I am thrilled to hear that King is returning to the universe, regardless of whether this leads to new stories. The Dark Tower was a bold and satisfying ending to Roland's story and the main series, but the multiverse it created is vast and ripe for more storytelling. It is rewarding to see that two decades after the books ended, The Dark Tower is continuing to grow with Flanagan's upcoming adaptation and King's return to the intricate universe he created.
