Stephen Amell Addresses Heels Season 3 Chances As Netflix Adds Wrestling Show With 94% RT Score

The chances of Heels season 3 gets an update from star Stephen Amell, as the acclaimed wrestling drama has been licensed by Netflix. Premiering in August 2021 on Starz and running for two seasons, Heels told the story of the DWL. A wrestling promotion in a small Georgia town, the DWL is at the center of a conflict between Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) as the two brothers squabble about how the promotion should move forward after their father's death. Heels season 3 was among the titles that Starz cancelled in 2023.

In an interview on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Amell was asked about the show's future as Netflix has acquired the show and will begin streaming it in the U.S. on September 15. Amell said that season 3 is a possibility, sounding hopeful that more people will discover the wrestling drama on a new platform. The actor did strike a note of caution, explaining that he has a leading role in the Suits: LA spinoff, which might complicate scheduling for a hypothetical return. But he also previewed where Jack Spade could go next. Read the quote below:

I think that Season 3 is a possibility, I think that people are going to have to watch it on Netflix. It’s gonna have to line up schedule wise for me, because I now have another job that’s in first position. But, listen, without trying to spoil it, we didn’t want to send my character out quite literally on his back. There was always the idea that we would tell more of a story, and I think there’s more to be told. I think that if we did come back, you might see a little bit of a time jump.

Heels Season 3 Has To Address A Big Cliffhanger

There Are Unresolved Questions

Heels season 2 concludes with a massive cliffhanger, as things finally appear to be looking up for the often troubled DWL. In the finale, titled "High Flying", the DWL looked to secure a major deal to stream their shows online as part of a streaming service. However, in the episode's closing minutes, in a match against Ace, Jack is injured and ominously has no feelings in his legs.

Heels , created by Michael Waldron, with Mike O' Malley as showrunner, has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Amell's comments suggest that Jack would have recovered eventually. But there are stories that need resolving, such as how the DWL's previous money problems came back to haunt them. Whether streaming on Netflix is enough to pull together a third installment or some kind of continuation remains to be seen. But it is worth noting that the Suits phenomenon is rare. It is not often the case that a show that has already ended will get weeks and months of sustained viewership, enough to generate headlines and trigger conversations about a spinoff.

It is also worth noting that Suits has 134 episodes, which helped it to sustain viewership. Heels has only 16, with eight in each season. It's not out of the question that the series will find a new audience. It almost certainly will due to the size of Netflix compared to Starz. However, as seen with the comedy Girls5eva, which moved to Netflix after being cancelled by Peacock, the change of a platform doesn't always lead to becoming a breakout hit and an automatic renewal.
