Even subgenres can thrive on Steam. While you wouldn't expect a ton of representation of the genre, there are a number of cyberpunk games on the platform, and more on the way.

Cyberpunkdreams Is A Huge Free RPG

You Can Play It Now

Cyberpunk Dreams Dialogue

Developed by Late Night Games, Cyberpunkdreams is an "evolving" RPG where you play the role of a wanderer in 2090s Cincinatti, boasting "2.9 million words of content." The setup is enticing, yet familiar: "2090s America, torn apart by war and corporate greed. A lone traveller stands outside the gates of Cincinnati, greatest of the border cities. How far will you go to make it to the top? How far will you go to fulfill your mission?"

Yep, it sounds like a dystopian cyberpunk game, alright, but it also has some seriously impressive user reviews. As Slopped-Up Chim Jims writes: "Insanely good game, well worth your support if you like narrative-focused stuff with a lot of depth."

Another user, SkyeJames878, gives a pretty ringing endorsement: "If you enjoy cyberpunk media at any level, there's no excuse for not playing this game, considering it's free. A lot of content and narrative exploration. While there's a learning curve as far as mechanics go, it's fun and rewarding when you discover the little nuances and references throughout the game."

One fan, Rinera, explains why the action point system (which is central to how many interactions you can choose to engage with per day) can feel limiting: "The problem is that… well… you end up feeling forced to play instead of wanting to play, which is always the downside of such a system. Having to spend your points so they’ll not start overflowing, not playing just because the game’s fun."

While it's not universally praised, reviews have improved over time, suggesting positive reactions to recent patches. It still has a long road of support ahead of it, given everything the developer has posted so far.

It's Still Being Expanded

There's More To Come

Through an "uncompromising cyberpunk narrative," you'll encounter choices that play out long term, as well as an action points system that forces players to engage with a limited number of options each day. As of this month, it's still being updated, whether through content updates or quality-of-life features.

Just recently, the studio pushed a handful of big fixes for Cyberpunkdreams, and teased a "skill system overhaul" incorporating fan feedback. If you're remotely interested in the cyberpunk genre, make sure you pick up Cyberpunkdreams for free on Steam.
