Digital gaming is a world of impermanence, and it feels like every day that something is being delisted from Steam or shutting down its servers. Just yesterday, Disney pulled a number of titles from the storefront, including the original version of the classic Star Wars shooter Dark Forces.
Book Of Travels Is Shutting Down Servers
Book of Travels is a uniquely ambitious indie game, placing players into a multiplayer "world of mystery" that emphasizes the titular travels rather than the destination. It features a suite of complex RPG systems and character-building, but rather than working toward a clear end goal or experiencing a linear story, players are confronted with the challenges of communication and undirected exploration.
Developer Might and Delight sets July 31st, 2026 as the day that servers for Book of Travels will be sunset, planning to transition the game to an offline version at that point. Since the game is losing its biggest point of appeal, Might and Delight is dropping the price from $29.99 to $4.99 and opening up the game fully to mods. Active development on Book of Travels will wrap up, so the early access banner will also be removed from the Steam page.
It's Not Too Late To Play
Book of Travels has been on my radar for a long time, so I'm sad to see it come to the end of its online journey. The $4.99 price, however, is just the incentive I needed to finally take the leap, and I'll definitely spend some time wandering in its multiplayer world before support comes to an end.
While this isn't the ideal fate for a multiplayer game, Might and Delight seems to be handling the shutdown in the fairest way possible. The studio claims to have "spent the past year" examining other options and deciding that this is the only course forward, so it doesn't seem to be a decision that comes lightly.
Transitioning the game to an offline state means that people will still get to enjoy it in some capacity, and the lowered price on Steam is a minor ask for even a compromised experience. If you want to check out Book of Travels while you can still encounter other players in its world, make sure to do so before the end of July.
