Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
There's been a lot of back-and-forth on when we can expect to see the Steam Machine, but the latest update from Valve is promising. While Valve showed off plenty of Steam Machine details last November, including all the key hardware specs for the living room PC, information on price and release date has been harder to come by. After initially suggesting an early 2026 release window, Valve started to use more hedging language, raising fan concerns that the release date could slip into 2027.
Yesterday, Valve updated a Steam blog post to confirm that "all three products" — the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller — will indeed be shipping in 2026. This followed an earlier version of the post that said the company "hope[d] to ship in 2026." In a statement to The Verge, a Valve PR representative said that "nothing has actually changed" on the company's end.
The Steam Machine Is Coming In 2026
There's No Major Delay After All
ValveTo be clear, there's still no guarantee that Valve will be shipping any products particularly soon. In a February Steam update, Valve explained that the current memory and storage shortages have delayed the announcement of "concrete pricing and launch dates." At the time, Valve affirmed that the "goal of shipping all three products in the first half of the year" remained.
While Valve has now confirmed that no internal targets have recently shifted, the transition from "early 2026" to "first half of the year" to simply "this year" isn't exactly promising. Nonetheless, after the vague wording in the initial version of the blog, hard confirmation of a 2026 ship date is a major relief for those anticipating the system.
We're Still Waiting On The Price
This Could Make Or Break The Steam Machine
Time may be of the essence for the Steam Machine's success, now more than ever. This week, Microsoft revealed its next-gen Xbox, code-named Project Helix, which will also take on the mantle of playing PC games. This could make it a direct rival to the Steam Machine, so a timely release from Valve may be needed to get ahead of the competition.
At this point, the biggest concern will be the Steam Machine's price. By the sound of it, it may not be competitive with traditional console price points, which could make the purchase hard for most players to justify.
Hopefully, we'll get an update about the Steam Machine price that's just as reassuring as the latest release window news. With the skyrocketing costs of components, though, I wouldn't keep my fingers crossed.
