Another Star Trek show is warping off into the great beyond: Variety is reporting that Paramount will not renew Starfleet Academy, and the series will come to an end after season two.
“We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to life,” CBS Studios and Paramount+ said in a joint statement provided to the trade. “The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”
The news of Starfleet Academy‘s ending comes at a tumultuous time for the Star Trek franchise, even as it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Both the show, which wrapped up principal photography in late February 2026, and the remaining other Star Trek series in active production, Strange New Worlds (which wrapped filming its truncated final fifth season in December last year), are in post-production, but otherwise, there is no longer a Star Trek show in active principal production for the first time in over a decade since Star Trek: Discovery launched the franchise’s streaming renaissance.
Although Starfleet Academy‘s debut season, despite the occasional controversy, was met with strong critical reception, Variety further notes that the 10-episode season failed to chart on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming viewership tables.
Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman—who has been responsible over the last decade-plus for all streaming Star Trek—recently said that he remains hopeful Star Trek has a future in the medium that birthed it in the first place, but it’s clear right now that Paramount’s priority for the series post-Skydance merger is instead on the big screen. After its $8 billion merger concluded last year, the only confirmed new Star Trek project announced since has been a new movie, helmed by Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Although a post-merger Paramount has yet to confirm a new Star Trek show is in the works (despite the franchise being pitched as a priority to the company, its current focus is more broadly on the acquisition of Warner Bros.), there are at least two series currently in various states of potential development.
Recently Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Meyers confirmed that he and fellow showrunner Akiva Goldsman had formally pitched a Star Trek: Year One series, which would continue the adventures of the USS Enterprise after the events of Strange New Worlds, with Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk in command. Meanwhile, back at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the studio confirmed that Lower Decks star (and Starfleet Academy producer) Tawny Newsome was working with Justin Simien to develop a live-action Star Trek comedy series, following workers on a pleasure resort planet in the 25th century.
We’ve heard very little since, but as Paramount begins to clear Star Trek‘s recent past out of the way, it wouldn’t be too surprising if either of them met the same fate as Starfleet Academy now has.
