The Harvest Festival in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is filled with creepy discoveries if players know where to look but when one sneaks up on an unsuspecting Farmer, it's easy to mistake it for a technical bug. For a game about the joys of pastoral living, there are plenty of sinister secrets around Pelican Town that have plagued players ever since Stardew Valley launched in 2016. While the mystery of the eerie rain cry may never be solved, one fan was fortunate enough to discover that an odd glitch was the result of a bizarre item.

Posted to Reddit by user Evening-Refuse-8562, the player shared their confusion at the fact that their Farm's shed suddenly turned black, questioning whether the color change was the result of a glitch.

The Stardew Valley community was quick to offer some insight, confirming that the shed was changed not by a bug but by the presence of the Cursed Mannequin, a strange piece of furniture that can change a structure's wallpaper and flooring. While not mechanically impactful, the switch is creepy for those who may not know of the Mannequin's power, even though the color change is only one of its abilities.

What Else Can The Cursed Mannequin Do?

A Fun Specter To Have Around The Farmhouse

Cursed Mannequins are special Furniture items that were added to Stardew Valley in the 1.6 Update. Dropped by Haunted Skulls, the Mannequin is seemingly possessed by some kind of trickster spirit as it enjoys messing with the Farmer during the night. Aside from changing the flooring and wallpaper of any structure that contains it, the Mannequin is also able to directly target the player, leading to some especially spooky mornings.

The Cursed Mannequin can swap clothes with the Farmer overnight, but only if it's been equipped with its own outfit. Players will wake up to their character wearing the Mannequin's clothes while the threads they slept in will be available on the Furniture piece. Additionally, it can also move around at night, meaning Farmers will often wake up to see it in a different place from where it was left.

The Cursed Mannequin is undoubtedly creepy, but it's by no means the most threatening item in Stardew Valley. The Ancient Doll has been known to attack players who use the Dark Shrine of Selfishness to turn their children into Doves; if one goes through with the procedure, the Ancient Doll will call the Farmer with a sinister message and even leap out of the TV to attack them for their sins. One has to imagine that a Cursed Mannequin that prefers a darker interior is a much better fate than the angered spirit of an Ancient Doll.
