Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: Ewoks #3Ewoks are Star Wars' well-known forest dwellers, but a new comic taking place after Return of the Jedi reveals that there were also Ewoks who preferred life above the water instead of among the trees. This different home preference could allude to a different breed of Ewok living on Endor, possibly one more adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle. However, the village eventually sank, eliminating these new Ewoks from the planet.

In Star Wars: Ewoks #3 by Steve Orlando, Álvaro López, Laura Braga, Antonio Fabela, and Joe Caramagna, a group of Imperials and mercenaries led by General Tern Koyatta are hunting for a weapons depot on the forest moon of Endor. The Imperials have kidnapped the Ewok Wicket W. Warrick from his village to be their guide after they learn that Wicket can speak galactic basic. As they travel, the group comes across what Wicket calls the Endless Lake.

an ewok, Wicket, stops his companions before crossing a lake.

Wicket warns the group that the waters are too dangerous to cross, but they don't listen and cross anyway. Wicket's explanation of the danger implies that there was once an Ewok tribe that made its home in or near the lake.

Marvel's Star Wars Comics Officially Expand the Lore of the Ewoks

The Endless Lake was Once Home to Another Ewok Village

the Ewok Wicket asks his companions to wait.

Wicket explains to his kidnappers that the Endless Lake used to be the home of an Ewok village before it was destroyed. Endless Lake Village was attacked by Orcon, king of the underwater kingdom, and he sunk the great village. Orcon laid claim to the lake, and the ruins of the village became known to the rest of the Ewoks on the moon as the desolation of King Orcon. Orcon turned the lake into a breeding pool for his devil serpents, the spawn of Orcon's beloved serpent queen, which made the lake too dangerous to cross.

If Endless Lake Village was truly once populated with semi-aquatic Ewoks, that could imply the existence of other tribes for all the different biomes on Endor's surface.

General Koyatta decided to ignore Wicket's warning of the dangers of the lake, and the entire group began to cross in a makeshift boat. Not long after being on the water, the boat was attacked by Orcon and his devil serpents, flipping the boat and dispersing the group in the water. One of the members of the group, an old droid head called Ee-Exsevenseven, was lost in the water. Wicket maneuvered through the water and rescued Exsev, but could only save one, claiming that he could not carry anything more.

How Many More Ewok Tribes Could Exist in Star Wars Lore?

A Water Village Implies an Ewok Water Tribe and Perhaps More Tribes on Endor

the Ewok Wicket explains a safe way to travel to his companions.

Wicket was able to swim through the water to rescue Exsev, but as he hails from Bright Tree Village in the forest, he was clearly built for living in the trees. However, if Ewoks were built for living in the forest, it's hard not to wonder why some chose to build a village over the Endless Lake - unless there were some Ewoks more suited for life over the water. Small changes to Ewok physiology, like thinner, waterproof fur, webbed toes and fingers, stronger arms and legs for swimming, and other changes, would equip an Ewok for a semi-aquatic lifestyle.

Star Wars is ready to celebrate Black History Month in February with a series of brand-new comic book covers that will delight all fans.

If Endless Lake Village was truly once populated with semi-aquatic Ewoks, that could imply the existence of other tribes for all the different biomes on Endor's surface. Perhaps a tribe of Ewoks that lives where there are fewer trees could construct a village underground, or Ewoks that live on or within the mountains of Endor could live in caves or build with stones. If they have the ability to adapt to new environments, Ewoks could travel and develop new homes throughout Star Wars' galaxy.
