Star Wars' New Trilogy Being Episodes 10-12 & Continuing The Skywalker Saga Would Be A Huge Insult To Rey & Daisy Ridley

6 days ago 3

Notably, Rey's movie is not expected to be part of the Skywalker Saga and hasn't been identified as episode 10, which makes sense given Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was meant to be the end of the Skywalker Saga. With conflicting reports regarding whether Kinberg's trilogy will be episodes 10-12, however, it seems the continuation of the Skywalker Saga could be on the table after all. If Kinberg's trilogy does comprise episodes 10-12, that would be a massive disrespect to both Daisy Ridley and Rey and would likely only cause further division in the fanbase.

It's Not Yet Clear Whether Simon Kinberg's Trilogy Is Episodes 10-12

Reports Regarding This Possibility Had Been Contradictory

Although Lucasfilm has yet to confirm or deny it, multiple sources have begun referring to this new Star Wars trilogy as episodes 10-12. This would be a true shock in light of the Skywalker Saga supposedly ending with The Rise of Skywalker, particularly given Star Wars has seemed to hold to that notion over the last 5 years. Although the franchise has released a number of TV shows and announced several movies, none of those projects has been identified as a continuation of this Saga.

In fact, projects like Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Andor, and The Mandalorian have seemed to be a direct and intentional shift away from not only the Skywalker family tree but also the Jedi versus the Sith dynamic entirely. Of course, shows like The Acolyte, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka have continued to have connections to the Jedi and the Skywalkers, but a new trilogy specifically considered episodes 10-12 would be quite different from that. Categorizing these movies as the next episodic trilogy would automatically suggest the Skywalker Saga is not over yet.

Daisy Ridley Deserves Better Than To Just Be Dropped From The Skywalker Saga

The True "End" Of The Skywalker Saga Has Always Been A Bit Confusing

If Kinberg's trilogy is a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, this would be a massive disrespect to Rey and Daisy Ridley. These movies have already been described as having all new characters, and while it's been hinted that some familiar faces will still pop up, this certainly doesn't suggest Rey will have a leading role. This would effectively bump Rey from the Skywalker Saga, a move that would be both insulting and confusing.

This would effectively bump Rey from the Skywalker Saga, a move that would be both insulting and confusing.

In truth, the notion that the Skywalker Saga ended with The Rise of Skywalker has been confusing since the movie released because Rey adopted the last name Skywalker at the movie's conclusion. If the Skywalker Saga is over, yet Rey Skywalker has an upcoming movie, what exactly was the definition of the 'Skywalker Saga' in the first place? This would only become all the more confounding if a new trilogy is added to the Skywalker Saga but excludes Rey.

Lucasfilm Need To Tread Carefully With Fans Of Rey & The Sequels

The Fanbase Is Already Incredibly Divisive, And This Could Cause Greater Divides

 The Rise of Skywalker

In addition to this possibility being a major slight to Rey and Ridley, making this trilogy episodes 10-12 would add fuel to the fire for many Star Wars fans, especially those who like the sequel trilogy. Although many still argue that the sequels are among Star Wars' worst movies, that certainly isn't the case for everyone. Many viewers like Rey, and there was particular fanfare around Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo's relationship, which led to a dedicated group referring to themselves as 'Reylos.'

This would also be an especially unfortunate time for Star Wars to make such a drastic change. There is still significant division about Disney Star Wars more broadly, and effectively removing Rey from the Skywalker Saga would only turn those who have supported the new direction of the franchise thus far against the new movies. It would also embolden those who have argued that the sequels should be removed from Star Wars canon altogether, as it would suggest the Skywalker Saga was moving on without Rey.

It remains to be seen whether this new trilogy will in fact be episodes 10-12, but hopefully, this is a brand-new trilogy entirely, separate from the Skywalkers. This is true because of what it would mean for Rey, but it also really is time for the franchise to move on; that was the entire point of the Skywalker Saga ending. Ideally, Star Wars will soon confirm that the new trilogy is not episodes 10-12, sparing Rey and Daisy Ridley the insult.
