With collective thousands of hours in games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Elden Ring, and The Legend of Zelda, he's now writes game features, guides, and reviews for Screen Rant, but has covered a wide range of topics, including ancient history, affordable travel, and overall health.

Some players seem to think that the third game in the Star Wars Jedi trilogy could be on the horizon, while others insist it's at least another year away. Currently in development at Respawn Entertainment, the third and final Star Wars Jedi game is expected to conclude the story begun in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and continued in Survivor.

During a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, host Tim Gettys hinted that he's "heard some things" that suggested Star Wars Jedi 3 could be released sometime in 2026, saying, "The Jedi Survivor sequel, I think, has a solid chance of coming out this year. I don't think it's a slam dunk, but I just wonder where that would fall."

Could Star Wars Jedi 3 Really Land This Year?

Where The Rumors Come From

It's not totally clear where the rumors around Star Wars Jedi 3 getting a 2026 release originated. Many fans seem to be citing a bit of simple release timeline math: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the second game in the trilogy, was released roughly three and a half years after Fallen Order. Late 2026 is about three and a half years from Survivor's April 2023 release, which would set an even pace for the third game's release.

Of course, none of this is substantiated by Respawn or publisher EA, but there's some precedent for it. It's not uncommon for video game series to space out their releases evenly, especially closely connected trilogies like Star Wars Jedi. Each game's development can build on the one before it, using the same engine and similar (if not identical) character models and animations to speed things along.

Even so, rumor has it that Star Wars Jedi 3 may be taking some big swings that could lengthen its development time. Rumor has it the sequel will feature non-linear gameplay — i.e., an open world or something close to it. That sort of thing is much bigger in scope than the first two games' linear levels, which means it naturally takes more time to put together.

Furthermore, some have speculated that the 2023 departure of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor director Stig Asmussen may have caused delays. That said, Asmussen left the company in what could've only been the very early stages of the third game's development. It seems doubtful that such an early transition would cause too much of a setback.

Not Every Star Wars Fan Is Convinced

In a Reddit post reacting to the rumors, Star Wars Jedi fans were split over the possibility of a 2026 release date. Frankly, the most positive reaction seemed to be players shrugging their shoulders and expressing excitement about how the third game in the series could build on the previous two's gameplay and story.

But others took the rumor with a grain of salt, with one fan simply saying "LOL. Maybe an announcement but it's not releasing this year."

Some fans pointed out that Star Wars Jedi would have a massive, Grand Theft Auto 6-sized problem with a late 2026 release. Set to be the biggest game of the decade thus far, GTA 6 is still on track for a November 2026 release, and would inevitably draw some of Star Wars Jedi's player base away if it came out about the same time.

And still others insisted that, even if Star Wars Jedi 3 makes it to shelves by the end of the year, they don't want it. Survivor suffered from serious performance issues on release, and delayed certain features until later updates."I made a promise to myself after the buggy mess that was Survivor that I ain't touching another Jedi game in the first year of release and I stand by that," one fan commented.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gettys clarified that even he's far from certan about Star Wars Jedi 3 getting a 2026 release. In response to a post that implies the 2026 release is concrete, he writes, "I didn't say that, and, as anyone should know about my hype a**, I don't know s***."
