It is no secret that the Star Wars franchise has been through some notable ups and downs in recent months and years. That said, the world of video games has felt like a relatively safe port in an otherwise uncertain storm, and the shining example of the adaptations we've had over the last decade or so remains the Star Wars Jedi series.
Both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor were fantastic games, and the story of Cal Kestis has become an integral part of the wider lore. As such, his story certainly deserves a fitting conclusion and the ideal place for that would be in a third game.
Happily, we know that a trilogy title is currently under development at Respawn Entertainment, though we haven't really heard too much about their plans for release up to this point. Now, new information has been leaked that has given us a potential release date, and it might not be as far away as you were expecting.
Over on Reddit, one fan shared news of leaks from FivesWalker, who has become well known as a relatively reliable source in the community. Those leaks suggest a potential release year of 2027 for the game, and an announcement in the very imminent future where we'll see more of exactly what the developer has been cooking up.
That would make sense for a number of reasons, not least because Star Wars will be celebrating its 50th anniversary as a franchise next year, and fans will be expecting a bunch of exciting releases to mark the occasion. At the same time, the first Star Wars Jedi game released in 2019, and the sequel dropped in 2023, which would make 2027 the most symmetrical release date we have.
Respawn Entertainment has historically been a very consistent studio when it comes to not giving their games too protracted of a period in development. That said, fans will be expecting something pretty special for the conclusion to Cal Kestis story, so they will need plenty of time to make sure they get every element of that right.
At the same time, it will be very interesting to see if those in charge of the franchise decide to employ Kestis anywhere else, as he remains one of the most popular figures in modern lore. Given that his appearances in video games so far have been completed via performance capture, they wouldn't even need to look for another actor to take on the role.
Outside of that, there are other exciting projects coming down the pipeline for Star Wars fans to look forward to, most notably Starfighter fronted by the always-beloved Ryan Gosling. There is also another feature film adaptation centered on Daisy Ridley's Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order, and that will thrust us further forward in the timeline than ever before.
