Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege (2024) #3 – written by Alex Segura, with art by Stefano Raffaele – finds Luke targeted by a new enemy, the Spice Runners of Kijimi. Fans familiar with the lore surrounding Beilert Valance know that the character was a classmate of Han Solo at the Imperial Naval Academy on the planet Carida. The two had a competitive relationship, but after Valance's TIE fighter went down, and he was left for dead, Solo went back for him. With the help of the other cadets, Valance's life was saved, but the crash resulted in his first set of cybernetics. Valance continued to fight for the Empire, but after sustaining too many injuries and cybernetic replacements, he was discharged from the Empire, and eventually became a bounty hunter.

Beilert Valance's appearances in Marvel's Star Wars comics thus far have been necessarily limited; given that he the character didn't appear in the movies, he couldn't become a full-fledged member of the Rebellion. Now, however, Marvel has arrived at the post-Return of the Jedi era, a wide open expanse in which many of the characters introduced in the comics over the last decade can flourish. Vlance is among the most prominent examples of that, and his timely arrival at Luke Skywalker's side in Republic Under Siege is likely just the beginning.
