Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has never been afraid to take risks, and across four seasons, the show's various experiments have made it one of modern Star Trek's more divisive entries. The series began as something of a crowd-pleaser, returning the franchise to an episodic format aboard Captain Christopher Pike's Enterprise while reintroducing familiar characters like Spock, Uhura, and Number One. As the show has progressed, however, it has increasingly pushed beyond straightforward science fiction, experimenting with comedy, horror, romance, musicals, alternate realities, and even puppetry.

The experimental approach has produced some of Strange New Worlds' most memorable episodes, but it has also divided viewers over just how far Star Trek should stretch the formula and pushed fans into debates over whether it's relying too much on gimmicky concepts. Season 4 has pushed that debate into overdrive, drawing a fairly harsh response from audiences, particularly toward its more overtly out-of-the-box episodes.

That said, Strange New Worlds is pushing the boundaries of the genre even further this coming October with a brand-new Star Trek release that could prove even more divisive than the infamous puppet episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may already be one of the franchise's most genre-flexible television series, but Star Trek: Outposts Unknown is taking that corner of the timeline somewhere completely different. The upcoming game is a narrative-driven strategy and colony-building experience set during the same 23rd-century era as Strange New Worlds, effectively transforming the familiar Starfleet mission of exploring new planets into a full-fledged outpost management simulator.

Developer Magic Fuel Games describes it as the first-ever outpost builder set within the Star Trek universe. Players command the USS Resonant and its original Starfleet crew as they explore the X'Lehari System, where a mysterious cosmic phenomenon threatens a civilization in need of Federation assistance.

Players will establish permanent research facilities, construct and upgrade buildings, manage resources, and decide how best to keep their crews alive and productive. Officers can be assigned tasks and leveled up over time, while expeditions and unexpected encounters can affect crew morale and survival. Later developer updates have also detailed elements such as day and night work shifts, ground and air vehicles, interplanetary resource transfers, and periodic Starfleet resupply missions.

Outposts Unknown is certainly an interesting extension of the Strange New Worlds era that goes beyond just regurgitating ideas from the television series. Its focus on colony simulation, logistics, resource management, and real-time strategy gives players responsibility for the less glamorous side of Starfleet's expeditions, and it will be interesting to see how fans react to the major genre jump to RTS-survival.

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown launches October 20, 2026, with support currently listed for Windows PC and macOS. The single-player game is being developed by Magic Fuel Games and published by Playstack, and you can wishlist it now on Steam.
