Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 9 - "300th Night"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's penultimate episode pulls the trigger on Caleb Mir's (Sandro Rosta) missing mother, and unveils the most insane super villain plan ever in Star Trek. Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kirsten Beyer, from a story by Beyer and Kenneth Lin, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 blends action, comedy, and family drama, culminating in a mind-boggling cliffhanger.

Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) and the USS Athena rescued Caleb Mir, Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), and Series Acclimation Mil (Kerrice Brooks) from Ukeck, a planet outside of the United Federation of Planets taken over by the Venari Ral. Also beamed aboard the Athena is Caleb's mother, Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany), who has been missing since Star Trek: Starfleet Academy began.

The USS Athena's escape from Ukeck was halted by the Venari Ral, as Nus Braka's (Paul Giamatti) master plan of revenge against the Federation comes to light. Under Jonathan Frakes' masterful and propulsive direction, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 plunges Captain Ake, the cadets, and the Federation into a crisis bigger than Star Trek has seen before.

Nus Braka's Super Villain Plan Is Star Trek's Biggest & Most Insane

Star Trek Starfleet Academy galaxy surrounded by mines

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 ends with the astounding sight of the entire Federation blanketed with Omega-47 mines, making it impossible to enter or leave Federation space. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, Nus Braka and the Venari Ral attacked Starbase J19-Alpha and stole top-secret weapons developed by the Federation.

Jonathan Frakes Confirms He Just Directed His Final Star Trek Episode (For Now)

Exclusive: Jonathan Frakes directs Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, and it's the last of his epic run of Star Trek episodes that he has helmed.

Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) revealed in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 that Nustopher stole Omega-47, which can shred space and subspace, making warp travel impossible for millions of years. The Venari Ral also stole technology that they turned into countless mines containing Omega-47, which they used to encase the total expanse of Federation space.

If Nus Braka detonates his Omega-47 mines, it would render warp travel impossible, cutting the entire Federation off from each other and the rest of the galaxy. It would essentially be the second coming of The Burn, but infinitely worse, because it would last millions of years. With the Federation still rebuilding post-Burn, this would be the catastrophic end of the galactic alliance.

Nus Braka delivered insight into his hatred of the Federation in his scorn-filled speech to his nemesis, Captain Ake, in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6. The resurgent Federation is a threat to the Venari Ral space pirate syndicate, but Braka's animosity goes deeper. Nustopher's wrath towards the Federation and Nahla, who considers him a "lowlife," is personal.

The climactic visual of the entire Federation encased in the glowing red of Nus Braka's Omega-47 mines is jaw-dropping. Braka's super villain plot is insane when one considers Federation space encompasses trillions of light-years and thousands of worlds. The idea that Nus Braka was able to cover that much literal space with his Omega-47 mines requires an astounding logical leap, but let's just go with it.

WIll Caleb Leave Starfleet Academy For His Mother?

Caleb broken up in Starfleet Academy

Caleb Mir's lifelong mission to reunite with his mother, Anisha, ends with them finding each other on Ukeck in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9. Unsaid until later in the episode is what the Mirs finding each other means: Caleb would be forced to choose between joining his mother or remaining in Starfleet Academy.

When Genesis, Darem, and SAM realized Caleb intended to stay with his mother, Mir attempted to burn his bridges by unleashing cruel truths about his friends. Yet Genesis gave as good as she got, and the Dar-Sha wounded Caleb by correctly assessing him that most men his age are trying to build their own lives, but Caleb is too committed to being "a messed-up little kid."

Although Caleb settled into and began enjoying life at Starfleet Academy, his driving motivation was always finding his mother. Cadet Mir kept himself separate to a degree so that he could justify leaving the Academy whenever he wanted. Also, Caleb understandably resented how his Federation membership was at the cost of "a gun pointed to his head," and that it was "Starfleet Academy or prison."

However, SAM is right that Caleb is "full of sh*t" and doesn't truly want to leave Starfleet or his friends. Caleb's actions bore this out; when the Venari Ral captured Genesis, Darem, and SAM, Caleb attempted to save them. Anisha saw what Caleb's friends mean to him and helped, taking a phaser shot for her heroism before the USS Athena arrived and beamed its people to safety.

The USS Athena swooping into Ukeck to save the cadets and Anisha mirrored the spectacular sight of the USS Enterprise-D sliding into a Borg Cube to save Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Captain Worf (Michael Dorn), and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) in Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale.

Whatever happens in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's season 1 finale, Caleb will have to ultimately choose between his mother and his future at Starfleet Academy. Although Sandro Rosta is part of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's cast in season 2, it's not out of the question that Caleb could leave the Academy with his mother, perhaps for summer break, only to return to San Francisco to resume his studies next season.

Anisha Mir Seeing Captain Ake Again Mirrors Their First Meeting

Anisha Mir terrified

When Anisha Mir was revived by The Doctor (Robert Picardo) aboard the USS Athena, she relived her worst nightmare when Captain Nahla Ake strode into sickbay. This perfectly mirrored Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's series premiere prologue, when Nahla was forced to separate Anisha from 6-year-old Caleb 16 years prior.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, episode 9 is the first time Jonathan Frakes directed Holly Hunter and Tatiana Maslany.

Anisha didn't know that Caleb joined Starfleet Academy, whether or not he was 'forced' into it, and Caleb went to great lengths to conceal that he is now Starfleet. However, Anisha is a technical genius, and no fool, so she must have put two-and-two together that her son was recruited into her hated Federation.

Anisha never dreamed that Caleb woiuld end up in Starfleet under Captain Nahla Ake, her jailer. Considering how Nahla ruined Anisha life, she might find it unforgivable that Ake and Starfleet sank their claws into her son and turned Caleb into one of them. How Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's season 1 finale resolves Nahla and Anisha's animosity will be fascinating.

Captain Ake Lost The USS Athena's Atrium & Nacelles

USS Athena losing nacelles

The USS Athena's getaway from Ukeck didn't go as planned, as the Venari Ral not only gave chase, but used the weapons it stole from Starbase J19-Alpha to knock Captain Ake's starship out of warp and disable it.

Captain Ake was forced to order a saucer separation to escape capture, but at the cost of leaving behind the USS Athena's nacelles and its atrium. Although Nahla swore that Nus Braka isn't keeping her ship, most of it, including the symbolic heart of Starfleet Academy, is now in the hands of the Venari Ral.

Nus Braka took advantage of the Federation pulling most of Starfleet's armada to Betazed to mark the opening of the new Federation headquarters to plant and activate his mines. Thanks to Captain Ake's mission to rescue her cadets on Ukeck, the USS Athena is now the only starship trapped outside of Braka's Omega-47 bubble covering all of Federation space.

Captain Ake, Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), The Doctor, and Starfleet Academy's main cadets, including stowaways Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané) and Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), as well as Anisha Mir if she fights for her son, are all that stand in the way of Nus Braga unleashing a cosmic catastrophe even worse than The Burn in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale.
